Awesome Agassi outlasts Martin
Andre Agassi
Agassi, a finalist at the French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open, is the first player to reach three-straight Grand Slam finals in the same year since Ivan Lendl in 1986.
Andre Agassi earned his second-career U.S. Open title Sunday evening in Flushing Meadows, New York with a five-set 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2 marathon-match triumph over fellow American Todd Martin. Though the match was decided in five sets, Agassi's serve was never broken, as he surrendered both the second and third sets in tiebreakers. When Monday's new ATP rankings are released, Agassi will take the world's top spot from Pete Sampras, who had to withdraw from the U.S. Open after injuring his back prior to the tournament. Martin will move to a career-high fourth in the world.
