Stewart claims 2nd U.S. Open crown
Payne Stewart
Stewart recovered from a horrid tee shot to save par on 18 and earn his second-career U.S. Open title.
Payne Stewart, who for the second straight year held the lead going into the final round of the U.S. Open, made a 20-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to edge Phil Mickelson by one stroke Sunday, capturing the title at the 99th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Stewart, who along with Mickelson carded a par-70 in Sunday's final round, won the U.S. Open for the second time in his career, having also won the 1991 title. He was the lone golfer at Pinehurst this weekend to finish the tournament under par at one-under 279. The 42-year-old Stewart lost a one-stroke lead going into the final round and was one shot off the lead with three holes to play. But he sank a 25-foot par putt on 16 and a five-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to set up the dramatic conclusion at 18. Mickelson, whose wife is due to give birth to the couple's first child at any moment, did not get to celebrate Father's Day with a U.S. Open championship as his 25-foot birdie putt on 18 came up a few inches short of the cup.
