Lawrie claims British Open crown
Lawrie used a tremendous final round to take his first British Open crown.
|
Scotsman Paul Lawrie outplayed Justin Leonard and third-round leader Jean Van de Velde in a four-hole playoff to win the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. Lawrie started the day 10 shots off the lead, but carded a final-round 67 to set up the three-man playoff round.
Van de Velde had the tournament all but wrapped up, as he took a three-shot lead to the final hole, but made a triple-bogey seven to finish the round with a six-over 77. That allowed Lawrie and Leonard, the 1997 British Open champ, to join him in the playoff with four-day totals of six-over 290.
Lawrie and Leonard were tied for the lead after two playoff holes, with Van de Velde one shot back. Lawrie then made his move on the par-four 17th, the third hole of the playoff round, when he stuck his second shot within 10 feet of the pin. Van de Velde's second shot also stopped within 10 feet, while Leonard's attempt landed 25 feet from the cup. Leonard's birdie putt missed the cup by inches, while Lawrie and Van de Velde sank their birdie putts. Lawrie, who took the lead on the putt, never looked back.
