| NOTES: |
|
Despite four finishes outside the top-20 in his last six Nationwide Series
starts, Kyle Busch is still the man to beat, as the series streaks into Bristol
Motor Speedway.
Busch, who has rebounded to place sixth and 10th in his last two Nationwide
starts, has won this race the past two seasons and is the Series' all-time
leader with 51 career titles.
His record at this track is unmatched, recording 10 wins and 15 top-10 finishes
since 2008 on all three series. He is a four-time Nationwide winner at Bristol
and has placed out of the top-10 just four times in 16 races. In those starts,
Busch has led 1,014 laps with an average finish of 10.313. Only Kevin Harvick
has a better result with an average placing of 7.5 and 1.075 laps led in 22
starts.
Last season, Busch recorded a milestone, as he became the first driver to win
50 races in the Nationwide Series after beating his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate,
Joey Logano, by inches at the finish line.
Busch, the pole sitter, took the lead from Logano just after a late-race
restart. Logano caught up with Busch and ran side-by-side with him during the
final 10 laps but came up 0.019 seconds short, making it the closest finish in
a Nationwide race at Bristol.
Back in 2010, Busch took the lead from Brad Keselowski after he intentionally
wrecked Keselowski with 32 laps remaining. The two drivers had battled for the
lead for several laps before Busch passed Keselowski on the inside, but
Keselowski nudged Busch from behind and wiggled him. Busch immediately
retaliated by putting Keselowski into a spin. He beat Jason Leffler at the
finish by 0.8 seconds for his 10th of 13 Nationwide wins that year.
David Ragan made a late-race pass on Carl Edwards for the lead and then held
off his Roush Fenway Racing teammate in a two-lap overtime finish to win the
2009 Food City 250 at BMS.
Starting from the 37th position on the grid in 2008, Brad Keselowski took the
lead with just 24 laps remaining and held on for his second career Nationwide
Series win, defeating Clint Bowyer by 1.025 seconds. Keselowski overtook
Bowyer, who had led the previous 121 laps.
Kasey Kahne won the 2007 Food City 250 at Bristol. Kahne held off a hard-
charging Jason Leffler in the final laps to record his second Nationwide
victory of the season and the seventh of his career. Kahne led only 10 laps,
including the final nine to edge Leffler by 0.374 of a second. Leffler, who
started on the pole, led three times for a race-high 81 laps.
In 2006, Matt Kenseth passed Kevin Harvick with just 17 laps remaining to
capture his 19th career Nationwide Series title. Harvick crossed the finish
line just 0.968 of a second ahead of Harvick. Pole sitter Ryan Newman
dominated the race in the early going, leading the first 95 laps. Newman faded
however and finished sixth. Kasey Kahne, who placed fourth, led for 72 laps,
while Harvick led for 39. 23 of the 43 cars finished the 250 laps.
Groundbreaking for Bristol International Speedway, as Bristol Motor Speedway
was originally known, took place in 1960. The track was exactly a half-mile in
length. In the fall of 1969, the track was reshaped and re-measured to .533
miles with the turns banked at 36 degrees. The first NASCAR Nationwide Series
race was held on March 13, 1982. The track surface was changed from asphalt to
concrete in 1992.
With the victory last year by Busch, the pole sitter has now captured this race
six times. In addition, Busch joined Kevin Harvick, Todd Bodine, Larry Pearson
and Brett Bodine as the only drivers to win this race in back-to-back seasons.
The next Nationwide Series race is the September 1 NRA American Warrior 300 at
Atlanta Motor Speedway. Carl Edwards won last year's race there.
