NOTES
The week after a major championship is always a hard one to generate a strong field, but the Travelers has a good group. The highest finisher from last week`s U.S. Open at Congressional is, if you can believe it, Kevin Chappell. The tour rookie tied for third in his first major championship and now will go for his first tour win. Bubba Watson is the defending champion this week after he finally earned his first PGA Tour title. Watson double-bogeyed the 17th hole in regulation on Sunday and birdied the last to get into a playoff with Scott Verplank and then U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin. On the first extra hole, Pavin was some 100 yards behind Watson off the tee and landed in a bunker. Verplank hit to eight feet, then Watson nearly ended it with a hole-out eagle. Pavin played his bunker shot to four feet, but Verplank sank his birdie try. Pavin told Watson to tap in his birdie effort and he obliged, eliminating Pavin. At the next hole, Verplank missed the green, but Watson only hit his to 45 feet. Watson`s birdie putt stopped three feet from the hole, then Verplank tried to putt from off the green and it was a disaster. The ball took two bad bounces and came up seven feet short. He missed that putt, then Watson tapped in for that first win, which become a springboard for greatness. Watson lost a playoff last year at the PGA Championship and made his first Ryder Cup team. He took down Phil Mickelson late in this year`s Farmers Insurance Open, then beat Webb Simpson in sudden-death to win again in New Orleans.Watson is now 13th in the world, but there are other stars in the field this week. Jim Furyk, Padraig Harrington, Geoff Ogilvy, Zach Johnson, Anthony Kim, Ian Poulter, Vijay Singh, David Toms and Nick Watney are all scheduled to tee it up.Also in the field is last week`s low amateur at the U.S. Open, Patrick Cantlay. This is the 60th Travelers Championship and 28th straight year the event will be held at the TPC River Highlands. Wethersfield Country Club hosted this event for the first 32 years.Golf Channel has the first two rounds, before CBS takes over on the weekend. Next week is AT&T National at Aronimink, which Justin Rose won last year.
