Sahl leads Dakota Dunes Open by 1

Saskatoon, SK (Sports Network) - Danny Sahl fired a 9-under 63 on Thursday to grab a 1-stroke lead at the end of the first round of the Dakota Dunes Open.

The Saskatchewan native is seeking his second career win on the PGA Tour Canada and first since the 2011 Syncrude Boreal Open.

John Ellis, Matt Hoffman and Brady Stockton each carded an 8-under 64 during their opening rounds at Dakota Dunes Golf Links to share second place.

European Tour regular Jaco Ahlers highlights a group of seven players tied for fifth at 7-under. He is joined by Brock Mackenzie, Tony Finau, Kyle Kallan, Darren Wallace, Jae Woo Im and Clark MacPherson.

Sahl went out with the early wave and quickly got into red numbers with a birdie at the second.

He picked up another shot at the fifth before reeling off three straight birdies from the eighth to move to 5-under.

After rolling in back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th, Sahl closed his bogey-free round with another pair of gains at the 17th and 18th to head into the clubhouse with a lead he would not lose.

Ellis, Hoffman and Stockton also posted bogey-free rounds on Thursday, with Ellis and Hoffman recording eight birdies during their rounds and Stockton picking up an eagle to go along with six birdies.

NOTES: Last year's runner-up Will Strickler carded a 4-under 68 to sit in a tie for 38th place ... Strickler was defeated by Matt Hill on the fourth playoff hole last year ... Hill is not defending his title at this event, as he is now a member of the Web.com Tour.
