McLaren unveils car for 2014 Formula One season

Woking, England (SportsNetwork.com) - McLaren became the first Formula One team to showcase its car for the 2014 season on Friday.

Named the MP4-29, McLaren's new car was displayed online from its Woking-based factory. Drivers Jenson Button, the 2009 F1 world champion, and Kevin Magnussen, a rookie this year, were present for the exhibit.

McLaren endured one of its most disappointing seasons in the team's history this past year, finishing fifth in the constructors' championship standings. Button gave the team its best finish of the year in the Nov. 24 season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, placing fourth. It was the first time McLaren failed to score a podium during the season since 1980.

"We have responded to the disappointment of our 2013 season by pragmatically framing our approach to the technical challenge," McLaren said in a statement. "The new MP4-29, revealed today, is a sensible and calculated response to the new regulations.

"But it is very much a frozen snapshot of the design team's steep development curve, and, as such, a machine that will potentially undergo more technical change throughout a single season than any other car in McLaren's long and illustrious history."

The upcoming season in F1 will feature several changes in technical regulations, including a revised engine. Teams will switch from a 2.4-liter V8 motor to a 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engine. The first of three preseason tests in F1 is scheduled for next week in Jerez, Spain. Testing in Sakhir, Bahrain will also take place next month.

Ferrari is scheduled to unveil its new car on Saturday, and Sauber is slated to do so on Sunday. Red Bull, Mercedes and Caterham plan to take the wraps off of their cars on the first day of testing in Jerez. Lotus' date is Feb. 19 in Sakhir.
