Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Brown ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more, as the Maryland Terrapins earned a 41-21 win over the NC State Wolfpack in the final game between the two schools as Atlantic Coast Conference foes.
Brown ran for a season-high 138 yards and also threw for 259 on 13-of-25 passing to help the Terrapins (7-5, 3-5 ACC) solidify their bowl chances. Amba Etta-Tawo finished with 101 yards on four receptions.
Brandon Mitchell completed 21-of-31 passes for 200 yards and two TDs for the Wolfpack (3-9, 0-8), who have lost eight in a row for the first time since 1959. Mitchell added 72 rushing yards and another score, although he was also sacked five times.
NC State opened the game with a 10-play, 80-yard drive, which ended with Mitchell's three-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Purvis.
Maryland cut the deficit to 7-3 on a 33-yard field goal by Brad Craddock midway through the first quarter. The Terrapins began that drive from the NC State 30, thanks to a long kickoff return and a facemasking penalty.
Maryland took the lead at the 5:03 mark of the first quarter, as Brown found Nigel King for a 53-yard scoring pass.
The Terps pushed their lead to 17-7 on Brown's 49-yard touchdown scamper with 2:42 to play in the opening frame.
Another 33-yard field goal by Craddock made it a 20-7 game at the 14:05 mark of the second quarter.
The Terps continued to pad their lead with two more touchdowns in the second quarter, both on the legs of Brown. His two-yard run with just under nine minutes remaining in the half made it a 27-7 game, then he stretched the margin to 34-7 with a three-yard TD scamper at the 3:23 mark.
NC State stopped the bleeding with a five-yard scoring strike from Mitchell to Rashard Smith with 1:18 to play until halftime.
Maryland needed only three plays to find the end zone again in the second half, as Brown found Albert Reid for a 27-yard touchdown pass at the 13:45 mark of the third quarter.
Mitchell cut the deficit to 41-21 with a three-yard touchdown run less than two minutes later, but NC State could draw no closer the rest of the way.
Maryland scored on each of its first six possessions to build that 34-7 lead.
