Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Joe Southwick passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns as the Boise State Broncos defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 40-14, at M.M. Roberts Stadium
Southwick was 18-of-27 on his passes and threw an interception in the Boise State (4-1) victory. Kirby Moore, Chris Potter, and Matt Miller each had a touchdown reception for Broncos, while D.J. Harper tallied 47 yards rushing and a pair of scores.
Desmond Johnson ran for 116 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Anthony Alford contributed 37 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in the Golden Eagles' (0-5) loss. Ricky Lloyd was 12-of-21 for 143 yards with two interceptions and Alford was 7-of-15 for 100 yards.
The Golden Eagles struggled early. Corey Acosta missed a 38-yard field goal and after Lloyd threw an interception, the Broncos responded with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Southwick to Miller.
Boise State handled most of the scoring in the second and third quarters. Harper ran in two scores, one for 11 yards and the other for 19 yards, and Southwick threw for another touchdown, this one to Potter for 33 yards. Michael Frisina also hit a 21-yard field goal and the Broncos led 30-0 late in the third quarter.
Finally, the Golden Eagles put themselves on the scoreboard at 4:10 mark of the third quarter when Alford had a four-yard touchdown run capping off a 13-play, 75-yard drive, making the score 30-7.
The Broncos showed no sign of slowing down early in the third quarter as Southwick drove them down the field 69 yards on 10 plays and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Moore.
Southern Miss answered with a 10-play, 76-yard drive, which resulted in a two- yard touchdown run by Johnson.
Frisina kicked a 30-yard field goal for Boise State to close out the scoring.
The Broncos cruised to an easy victory despite converting just 2-of-11 third downs.
