GAME NOTES: The Rider Broncs look to continue their recent dominance over Marist when the two teams meet up for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at McCann Arena.
Rider has won 11 of the last 12 head-to-head meetings to take a 25-21 lead in the all-time series with the Red Foxes.
The Broncs have lost three of their last four outings, and that includes a 77-69 home loss to Saint Peter's two nights ago. That marked Rider's lone home game in a stretch that will see the team play five of six on the road. Next up, the Broncs will travel to Manhattan on Friday.
Marist went on the road to face Siena and Manhattan last weekend and lost both contests. However, the Red Foxes will now play their next two games at McCann Arena, where they have won four straight, including two in league play. Following this tilt, they'll host Saint Peter's on Monday.
Rider was unable to pull out the victory on Thursday night despite a career- high 28 points from Daniel Stewart (15.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg), who led all scorers. Jimmie Taylor (11.9 ppg) also reached double figures with 14 points. Saint Peter's broke a 35-35 tie with a 15-5 run midway through the second half and then spent the rest of the game playing frontrunner. The Peacocks beat Rider at its own game by making 31-of-35 free throws (.886), including 15-of-16 over the final two minutes and change. The Broncs lead the MAAC and rank 23rd nationally in free-throw percentage (.751). Anthony Myles is averaging a team- best 18.5 ppg, although he shot just 1-of-10 from the floor against SPC and finished with eight points.
For Marist, Chavaughn Lewis leads the way with 16.9 ppg to go along with 4.4 rpg. Khallid Hart (13.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and Jay Bowie (10.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg) are also averaging double figures, and that trio has been in the starting lineup together for all 16 games this season. Depth has been an issue however, as the Red Foxes are shooting just 39.1 percent from the floor as a team and are minus-7.5 in scoring margin. They took Manhattan to overtime this past Sunday, but the Jaspers did not miss a shot in the extra session, while Marist was just 2-of-8 from the floor. Ultimately, the Red Foxes did not play well enough defensively to earn the victory as Manhattan shot a sizzling 58.5 percent for the game and made 7-of-10 3-pointers. Lewis led the way with 25 points, followed by Hart with 24.
The Broncs have had the upper hand in this series, but they have not played particularly well of late and now must deal with a Marist team that is looking to run its home winning streak to five in a row.
