GAME NOTES: Both the Denver Pioneers and IUPUI Jaguars drag three-game losing streaks into their first-ever Summit League clash at Magness Arena.
IUPUI has lost all three of its matchups against conference competition. The Jaguars dropped a 69-57 decision to South Dakota Thursday. In all, the Jaguars have lost eight of their last nine games.
Denver has lost three in a row and four of its last five games. The Pioneers are coming off a 67-64 heartbreaker against IPFW, which dropped them to 0-2 early in the Summit League standings.
This is the first ever meeting between Denver and IUPUI. The two teams will meet again in Indiana later this season on Feb. 13.
IUPUI led 49-47 with just over 11 minutes to play against South Dakota, but allowed their lead to falter and disappear as the Coyotes eventually ran away with a victory. Khufu Najee scored 12 points to pace the Jaguars in the contest, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor. Donovan Gibbs chipped in 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as the two Jaguars were the only ones to reach double digits in scoring. IUPUI shot 40.4 percent from the floor.
Ian Chiles scored seven points against South Dakota, but maintained his team- leading 16.6 ppg average. Chiles is shooting 42.6 percent from the field through the first 20 games of the season. His 35 assists is second on the team, and 21 steals ties for the Jaguars' lead. Mitch Patton is second on the Jaguars with an 11.9 ppg average and a healthy 6.2 rpg clip. The Jaguars average 69.7 ppg this season.
Denver shot 51.1 percent from the floor against IPFW, connecting on five more shots in the game than the Mastodons, but still came away with the loss in conference play. The Pioneers turned the ball over 15 times in the contest, which led to 28 points off turnovers for the Mastodons. Cam Griffin led Denver with 13 points and six rebounds, while Brett Olson, Bryant Rucker and Marcus Byrd each contributed 11 points. The Pioneers hit 41.2 percent of their 3- point attempts in the game.
Olson tops the team in scoring this season with a 14.5 ppg average, with Chris Udofia second and the only other player averaging double digits at 12.2 ppg. Udofia has a team-best 62 assists on the year, with Olson a close second at 59. Griffin is fourth in scoring on the Pioneers at 8.2 ppg, but leads the team in rebounding with a 6.8 rpg clip. The Pioneers average 64.5 ppg through 17 games.
While Denver isn't much of a scoring threat, the Pioneers still hold their opponents to 59 ppg, and IUPUI allows 72.9 ppg. Denver has a perfect chance to get back in the win column in this one.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Denver 67, IUPUI 58
