GAME NOTES: Richmond's Cedrick Lindsay and Fordham's Jon Severe, the top two scorers in the Atlantic 10 Conference, go head to head tonight when the Spiders and Rams tangle at Rose Hill Gym.
Although Severe (21.6 ppg) and Lindsay (19.2 ppg) are the most prolific scorers in the conference, both their teams are looking to stop losing streaks. The Spiders have dropped back-to-back contests and will complete a three-game road trip tonight. The Rams have lost three in a row.
Richmond is giving up just 64.9 ppg, which ranks second in the A-10. The Spiders, though, are scoring only 69.1 ppg, which is 11th out of 13 teams in the conference. The Spiders are second in the A-10 in field goal percentage defense (.405), but on the flip side are shooting just 30.7 percent from 3- point range, which ranks next-to-last.
As good as the Spiders' defense has been this season, they will have to bounce back in a big way tonight after allowing a campaign-high in points in their last game, an 84-70 loss at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. Lindsay led all scorers with 27 points, Kendall Anthony finished with 12, and Trey Davis pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds.
Anthony (13.1 ppg) has connected on 40-of-109 attempts from beyond the arc, while Alonzo Nelson-Ododa has compiled 36 blocks on the season. Despite Nelson-Ododa's presence down low, the Spiders are being outrebounded by an average of 5.2 rpg. That's the worst margin in the A-10.
The Rams are coming off an 87-81 loss at Duquesne on Wednesday. Severe scored a game-high 35 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the floor. Severe hit 7-of-12 3-pointers in 39 minutes of action. Both Branden Frazier and Mandell Thomas contributed 15 points and handed out six assists is support.
With Severe and Frazier (18.2 ppg), the Rams have the highest scoring backcourt in the A-10. Thomas (14.3 ppg) leads the team in steals with 22. Sophomore forward Ryan Rhoomes is second in the conference in field goal percentage (.662).
The Spiders have won six consecutive contests against Fordham, including the last three at Rose Hill Gym. Expect this game to be close, as the Spiders are playing the finale of a four-game road trip.
