GAME NOTES: The SIU Edwardsville Cougars return home to face the Austin Peay Governors on Thursday night in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Vadalabene Center.
SIU Edwardsville is coming off a 64-63 setback at Tennessee Tech last Saturday to fall to 1-3 in OVC play, and 0-8 on the road this season.
Down by as many as 21 points, the Cougars mounted a furious comeback. After a layup by Donivine Stewart got the Cougars within one, 64-63, with 20 seconds left, Tennessee Tech's Shirmane Thomas was fouled on the ensuing inbound play and missed a pair of free throws. SIUE got the rebound, but Stewart missed a layup and Ray Lester's put-back attempt failed as time expired.
The loss was the second straight for SIU Edwardsville, which has just two wins in its last nine games.
During their two-game slide, the Cougars have averaged just 57.5 ppg, down considerably from the 70.9 ppg they put up on the season.
Donivine Stewart leads the inept SIUE offense, averaging 11.5 ppg. Nobody else averages in double figures for the Cougars, who are 4-3 at home this season.
Austin Peay had a three-game win streak halted and fell to 2-1 in OVC play when it lost at Murray State last Saturday.
Murray State used a 20-3 first-half run, and the Governors never recovered as Austin Peay fell to the Racers in an 89-67 final.
The game was decided at the end of the first half. With Austin Peay leading 25-21 with 6:38 left before intermission, the Racers went on the massive run as the Govs went cold, making just 1-of-10 field goal attempts. Murray State built a 41-28 lead after the dust settled and went into the break ahead 43-31.
Will Triggs and Travis Betran each scored 17 to lead the Govs. Zavion Williams came off the bench to score 16 points and dish out seven assists.
The Governors, who are 0-1 during a three-game road trip, are just 1-6 as the visitor this season.
Unlike the lackluster offense of the Cougars, the Governors boast four players who average in double figures, led by Travis Betran and Chris Horton, both of whom average 13.8 ppg. Horton also leads the squad with 10 rpg.
Will Triggs (11.6) and Zavion Williams (10.4) round out the double-digit scorers for Austin Peay, which averages 76.2 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting from the field.
While Austin Peay doesn't own a lights-out offense, it has more weapons than the Cougars and despite not getting great results on the road, the Govs should come out with the win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Austin Peay 68, SIU Edwardsville 58
