GAME NOTES: The UC Davis Aggies have a brief two-game homestand this week at The Pavilion, starting with a Tuesday night battle with the Sacramento State Hornets.
It has been a relatively quiet start for Sacramento State, which has played just three games in the season's first three weeks. After opening the campaign with a convincing 73-43 win over UC Santa Cruz, the Hornets dropped to 1-2 following two straight road losses at Cal State Bakersfield (74-66) and nationally-ranked UCLA (86-50).
UC Davis participated in the Portland State Tournament last weekend, and while it won its matchups with SIU Edwardsville (80-75) and Loyola-Chicago (64-61 in OT), it dropped the tournament finale against host Portland State on Sunday, 79-63. The Aggies are now 3-3 on the season, which includes a win in their only home game against Holy Names University on Nov. 11 (80-54).
These two sides have seen plenty of one another over the years, with UC Davis holding a 64-47 advantage in the all-time series.
As expected, Sacramento State was thoroughly outmatched by UCLA in every phase of the game the last time out, as it was outshot from the field, 54.5 percent to 33.9 percent, and lost both the rebounding (40-29) and the turnover (18-10) battles on its way to the 36-point loss. Dylan Garrity was the only player to finish in double figures with 18 points, and while he was just 6-of-15 from the floor, all six of those makes came from 3-point range. The Hornets' performance against the Bruins did little to help their season averages, as they score 63.0 points per game while giving up 67.7. Garrity (17.0 ppg) is shooting a lofty 47.8 percent from the beyond the arc, but his teammates have had virtually no success from long distance, as the Hornets shoot a meager 28.6 percent from 3-point territory. Mikh McKinney (10.7 ppg) hands out 3.3 assists per contest and has been nearly automatic from the foul line (.889).
The Aggies fell flat in their tournament finale on Sunday, as they got down to Portland State by eight points at the half and could never climb their way back in. The team struggled with its shots from all over, making just 23-of-60 from the field and 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Corey Hawkins was able to overcome the struggles of most of his teammates by pouring in 23 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Josh Ritchart (17 points, seven rebounds) was also impressive, while Darius Graham added 10 points. On the season, UC Davis has put up solid offensive numbers (.459 FG percentage, 71.7 ppg), but it has not been enough to mask its deficiencies on the defensive end of the court (.456, 77.2 ppg). Ritchart is off to a hot start, shooting 65.1 percent from the floor for 17.7 points per game while also leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per tilt. Hawkins (15.6 ppg) hasn't been so efficient with his shots (.365). Ryan Sypkens (12.0 ppg) has drained 20-of-45 from beyond the arc, while Graham (7.3 ppg) hands out 5.2 assists per contest.
Sunday's performance not withstanding, UC Davis showed some impressive flashes during the Portland State Tournament and will be eager to ride that momentum into its return home against a lackluster Sacramento State squad.
