GAME NOTES: The Cal State Fullerton Titans will seek to mend a two-game losing skid as they play host to the Cal Poly Mustangs in Big West Conference action Thursday at Titan Gym.
Cal Poly had a three-game winning streak snapped by Long Beach State in the team's last outing, 63-62, which was the Mustangs' first conference loss this season. Though the Mustangs are 7-10 overall this season, they're 3-1 in the Big West and just a half-game out of first place.
Fullerton opened up conference play this season with a victory over UC Riverside, but has since fallen in back-to-back contests to UC Irvine and UC Davis, the latter being the most recent game. The Titans fell to the Aggies, 69-61, in that one.
Cal Poly has a 10-game lead in the all-time series, 34-24, including games prior to either program's emergence at the Division I level. Cal Poly has lost back-to-back matchups with the Titans, though.
Cal Poly had a chance to beat Long Beach State at the buzzer in the two teams' recent meeting, but a 17-foot jumper by Jamal Johnson hit the back rim and caromed out, giving LBSU the win. Chris Eversley led all Cal Poly scorers with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor. Kyle Odister was the only other Mustangs player to reach double figures, posting 10 points in 25 minutes of action. Cal Poly shot 44.2 percent from the field, but a dismal 40 percent from the free-throw line.
Eversley and Dave Nwaba are the only two Mustangs players to average double- digits scoring figures this season. Eversley checks in at 13.9 ppg, while Nwaba posts 12 ppg on 57.5 percent shooting from the floor. Eversley paces the Mustangs in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and steals (23), while Nwaba leads the team in blocked shots with 10. Johnson tops the Cal Poly roster with 55 assists on the season.
UC Davis needed a second-half comeback to defeat Cal State Fullerton at home, but 60.9 percent shooting in the second frame did the trick. Alex Harris scored 19 points for Fullerton on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor before fouling out. Michael Williams contributed 13 points, while Steve McClellan notched a team-high 13 rebounds coming off the bench. The Titans shot 37.9 percent from the field.
Williams and Harris, like Eversley and Nwaba for Cal Poly, are the only two players averaging double-digit scoring totals. Williams nets 15.6 ppg on 43.3 percent shooting, while Harris scores 12.6 ppg. McClellan leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 rpg, while Sheldon Blackwell heads the Titans in assists with 39. Fullerton is averaging 66.2 ppg through 17 contests, but is giving up 70.2 ppg to its opposition.
The Mustangs may be headed out on the road where they've only won once this season, but Cal State Fullerton isn't playing its best basketball to this point. With some distributed scoring, Cal Poly can get its first win at Titan Gym since 2011.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Cal Poly 70, Cal State Fullerton 65
