GAME NOTES: The Fresno State Classic continues on Saturday night, as the host Bulldogs square off with the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners at the Save Mart Center.
Bakersfield opened the season with a hard-fought loss at Washington State on Nov. 8, 62-56, but since then it has been red-hot with five consecutive victories. The Roadrunners started tournament play on Friday night with an impressive come-from-behind triumph over Northern Arizona, 61-50.
The Bulldogs began the 29th Fresno State Classic, and the first since 2007, with a disappointing 84-74 loss to Drake on Friday night. The setback spoiled an impressive start to the season for the Bulldogs, who had won four of six prior to the event.
Fresno State has won four straight games over Bakersfield, including a sweep of a home-and-home series in February of 2011 to take a 4-2 lead in the all- time series.
The Roadrunners appeared in trouble early in the second half as they trailed NAU by six points, but they grabbed hold of the contest by going on a 21-2 run and never looked back. Even with the hot second half, the squad shot just 38.3 percent from the field in the win, but it had a strong showing from the foul line (20-of-26) and also turned 23 NAU turnovers into 26 points. As its record would indicate, Bakersfield has performed very well at both ends of the floor this season, as it outshoots its opponents, 48.2 percent to 37.1 percent, on its way to a +11.0 scoring margin. It's also been great from 3-point range (.413). Issiah Grayson leads the way with 11.0 points per game and also gets his teammates involved with 4.8 assists per contest. Javonte Maynor (10.2 ppg) is the only other player to average in double figures, but the Roadrunners have a deep bench with 11 players netting at least 4.3 points per game.
Fresno State was able to overcome an early deficit to take a one-point lead with less than eight minutes to play in its opening-round game, but Drake answered by going on a 12-2 run to take control of the contest. The team shot 47.2 percent from the field and had a great showing from 3-point range (12- of-26), but it was ultimately done in by a poor performance at the foul line (12-of-22), and losing the rebounding battle (34-27) didn't help either. Marvelle Harris did all he could by scoring 26 points on 5-of-9 from long range. Cezar Guerrero tallied 16 points and seven assists, while Paul Watson and Allen Huddleston added 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Bulldogs are typically a strong shooting team, making 47.4 percent of their field goal attempts for just shy of 77 points per game. Harris (17.3 ppg) has established himself as the go-to guy in the early going. Guerrero (14.0 ppg), Watson (12.6 ppg) and Huddleston (10.3 ppg) will all need to step up if Tyler Johnson (14.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg) misses significant time with a foot injury.
Bakersfield has looked very good this season and is certainly capable of continue its winning ways, but Fresno State appears in solid shape to bounce back and claim itself a win in its own event.
