GAME NOTES: The top two teams in the Southern Conference South Division will battle it out at TD Arena, as the College of Charleston Cougars play host to the Davidson Wildcats.
Davidson has reeled off eight straight wins to take over sole possession of first place in the SoCon South. Most recently, the Wildcats toppled Appalachian State this past Saturday, 87-52. That victory improved their home record to 9-1 on the season, while the Wildcats also sit above .500 in true road games (6-4).
Charleston boasts the second-best record in the conference and enters tonight's contest two games back of Davidson. The Cougars were on the road over the weekend and they picked up their sixth consecutive victory with Saturday's 71-68 triumph at Chattanooga. The Cougars have actually fared a bit better on the road this season (9-2) than at home (9-5).
The Wildcats notched a 77-68 win over CofC nearly a month ago, which extended their lead in the all-time series to 51-13.
Davidson put Appalachian State away early by shooting an ultra-efficient 65.2 percent from the floor and knocking down seven 3-pointers in the first half to build a 49-23 halftime lead. The Wildcats had 14 assists on 15 field goals and closed the half on a 16-1 run. Jake Cohen and Tom Droney shared team-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece, while De'Mon Brooks finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Chris Czerapowicz recorded his first career double- double with 10 points and 11 boards, and Nik Cochran (8 pts) reached the 1,000-point mark for his career. On the season, Cohen paces the squad with 14.0 points per game to go along with 5.8 rebounds. Brooks is averaging 13.6 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds.
Andrew Lawrence leads Charleston with 13.7 ppg, followed by fellow starting guard Anthony Stitt with 10.9 ppg. Both of those players command attention along the perimeter, where they have combined to knock down 86-of-221 threes (.389). Down low, Adjehi Baru is shooting 52 percent from the floor while averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 8.5 boards. The Cougars really get after it on the glass, where they boast a +5.5 rebounding margin on the season. Against Chattanooga last weekend, it was Trent Wiedeman who provided a spark off the bench with 16 points and 10 caroms to lead four Cougars in double figures. CofC held a key 23-1 edge in bench points for the game. Lawrence and Stitt each scored 13, and Anthony Thomas finished with 10.
This figures to be a tightly contested battle between SoCon heavyweights. The Wildcats have certainly held their own on the road this season, although Charleston's size will present some matchup challenges. Still, Davidson is coming off the more impressive outing and has not tasted defeat in a month.
