GAME NOTES: Among the top-10 scorers in the nation, Isaiah Canaan is poised to break a prominent Murray State record tonight when the Racers visit Southeast Missouri State in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown.
The Racers snapped a two-game skid with a 73-62 win at Tennessee-Martin on Thursday. Canaan led all scorers with 18 points, while Stacy Wilson and Jeffery Moss ended with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Canaan hit a pair of 3-pointers and enters tonight's game tied with Frank Allen (1989-93) for Murray State's all-time record for 3-point baskets with 251. Canaan has made at least one 3-pointer in a school-record 23 straight games.
Canaan (20.9 ppg) is shooting better than 42 percent from beyond the arc. Ed Daniel (15.5 ppg) is the leading rebounder at 10.5 per contest, while Stacy Wilson (14.2) is the other double-digit scorer in the starting lineup for the Racers. All told, Murray State, coming off its 600th OVC regular season victory, is averaging 75.3 ppg. That is tops in the OVC. The Racers are also shooting 46.8 percent from the field, which is tied with Eastern Kentucky for the top spot in the conference.
The Redhawks, who are riding a four-game winning streak, will conclude a three-game homestand tonight. They are coming off an 86-84 triumph against Austin Peay on Thursday. Corey Wilford scored 19 points in that contest. Coming up a rebound shy of a double-double for the Redhawks was A.J. Jones who tallied 16 points, followed by Lucas Nutt with 14 points and Nino Johnson with 12 points and nine boards of his own. The Redhawks have won seven of their last nine contests and now have the OVC's longest winning streak. Additionally, SEMO has won three in a row at home and are 6-1 at the Show Me Center this season.
The Redhawks sit atop the OVC in field goal percentage defense and rank 16th in the country as foes shoot just 37.8 percent from the floor, although Austin Peay drained 53.1 percent of its total shots. That includes opponents shooting a mere 29 percent from beyond the arc. Prior to the Austin Peay game, SEMO held foes under 50 percent shooting overall in 21 straight games going back to last season.
Tyler Stone leads the Redhawks with 17 points a game and he's also averaging 8.4 rebounds per contest. Wilford (14.1 ppg) and Johnson (12.1 ppg, 10.0 rpg) are the other double-figure scorers for a team that is shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range.
Murray State has captured eight of the last nine on SEMO's home court. Expect this to be a tight battle with the Racers getting enough support from Canaan to come out on top.
