GAME NOTES: The Georgia State Panthers pay a visit to the Ted Constant Convocation Center to tangle with the Old Dominion Monarchs in a Colonial Athletic Association bout.

After a sluggish start against William & Mary on Wednesday night, Georgia State came on strong to earn a lopsided 74-58 decision. It was a much needed win for the Panthers, who had dropped seven of their previous eight games. Four of those losses were by only one possession, and a fifth loss came in overtime.

Things have gone much worse for Old Dominion, as the team has tasted victory only once in the last two months. The Monarchs are currently riding a five- game skid, which includes a 65-60 setback at UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday.

ODU has won 15 of 17 meetings in the head-to-head series, as the Panthers' only win in Norfolk came back in the 1977-78 season. However,

Georgia State trailed W&M by as many as 14 late in the first half. However, the Panthers closed out the period with a 10-1 spurt, then put together a 22-5 run over a 12-minute span in the second half to take control. Manny Atkins finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with five steals. Rashaad Richardson added 12 points, while Devonta White tallied 11 points and five assists. Once again, GSU took care of business at the foul line, converting 23-of-25 attempts. Over their last two outings, the Panthers have sank 43- of-47 (.914) at the charity stripe, and they are shooting at an 80-percent clip since league play began. Leading scorer R.J. Hunter (15.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg) has been a big part of that success at the foul line, and he is one of only six freshmen in the nation averaging at least 15 points and five rebounds. White is second on the team with 14.0 ppg, followed by Atkins with 13.4 ppg.

Finding consistent offense has been a season-long issue for the Monarchs, as they are shooting just 39.4 percent as a team. DeShawn Painter paces the squad with 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, although no other ODU player is averaging double figures in the scoring column. In Wednesday's loss to UNCW, Painter posted 18 points, while Richard Ross added 11. The Seahawks trailed by three at halftime, but Keith Rendleman scored all 14 of his points in the second half, including 10 in a row at one point, and the Monarchs were unable to keep pace. ODU shot just 39.3 percent as a team, including a 3-of-14 effort from beyond the arc. The game featured eight ties and 10 leads changes, but UNCW was simply the better team down the stretch, as has been the case for many of ODU's opponents this season.

The Monarchs have dominated this head-to-head series, although this year's squad has certainly not dominated anybody. Look for Georgia State to pick up right where it left off in the second half against William & Mary.
