GAME NOTES: A pair of bottom-dwellers in the Big 12 Conference meet at Daniel- Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth on Tuesday night, as the TCU Horned Frogs entertain intrastate rivals the Texas Longhorns.
Considering its 20-13 record during the 2011-12 campaign, this season for Texas has been a major disappointment as it sits with an 11-14 mark overall and just a 3-9 record in Big 12 play. The Longhorns took down Iowa State on Feb. 2 in double-overtime (89-86), but they fell back to their losing ways at Kansas on Saturday (73-47), and they are winless in seven true road tilts this season.
Bringing up the rear in the Big 12 standings is TCU, which has spoiled a solid 9-4 start to the season by losing 11 of 12 conference matchups. The Horned Frogs have dropped three straight since their improbable upset of Kansas on Feb. 9, most recently getting blown out at Iowa State on Saturday, 87-53.
Texas won the first meeting between these two teams this season, 60-43, in Austin on Feb. 2, to extend its lead in the all-time series to 103-62.
The Longhorns offensive attack has been underwhelming all season long, as they score fewer than 64 ppg on 40.6 percent field goal shooting, but they reached new lows in their blowout loss to Kansas over the weekend. Their 15 points in the first half tied their lowest-ever point total in a half in a Big 12 game, and they finished the night by shooting just 12-of-55 from the field (.218), marking their worst single-game field goal percentage in their history in the conference. Myck Kabongo, playing in only his second game after serving a 23- game suspension, shot a paltry 2-of-10 from the field but made 9-of-10 from the foul line for 13 points. Sheldon McClellan is Texas' top scorer, netting 14.2 ppg, but he sports poor percentages from the field overall (.370) and 3- point range (.269). Julien Lewis chips in 10.7 ppg, and while Javan Felix (8.0 ppg) has shot poorly from the field as well (.344), he hands out 5.2 apg. UT's one saving grace has been its defensive play, which yields just 63.7 ppg on a lowly 36.5 percent shooting effort.
TCU found itself down by 15 points at the half against Iowa State on Saturday afternoon, and it simply couldn't recover as it wound up losing by 34. The team shot just 21-of-55 from the field (.382) and a miserable 5-of-17 from the foul line (.294). Kyan Anderson led the way with 11 points and eight assists, but he was only 4-of-15 from the floor. The sophomore guard scores 11.2 ppg on 38.9 percent shooting on the season, and he has been especially woeful in the last six games, making just 21-of-70 attempts from the floor (.300). Garlon Green joins Anderson in double figures with 10.0 ppg, but he too has been inconsistent at best (.374). Adrick McKinney mans the paint with 7.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg, while Connell Crossland (5.9 rpg) and Devonta Abron (5.2 rpg) are also solid in close to the basket. Not surprisingly, TCU's offensive attack is far and away the worst in the Big 12 (54.0 ppg), which has spoiled a strong defensive effort (60.3 ppg).
Expect points to come at a premium in this one as both teams feature rather lackluster shooting attacks. TCU has won more games than it has lost at home (8-7), but only one of those wins has come in Big 12 action. Texas isn't exactly reliable, but with Kabongo back in the lineup the 'Horns get the nod to claim their first road win of the season.
