GAME NOTES: The Dayton Flyers pull into the City of Brotherly Love to tangle with the La Salle Explorers in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash.
Dayton is hoping to avoid an 0-3 start to conference play, which would be its worst start since the 2005-06 season when it lost its first four in A-10 action. The Flyers have dropped their first two league meetings, falling in a 74-62 final at VCU before being dropped in a 79-73 verdict at home this past Saturday to Butler.
La Salle is off to its best since the 1989-90 season, and the team has won five of its last seven coming into this game.
Four Flyers scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as UD suffered a six-point loss to No. 14 Butler. Dyshawn Pierre had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Khari Price tallied a career-high 10 points for the Flyers. They were joined by Vee Sanford with 14 points, Kevin Dillard with 13, while Devin Oliver snared 13 rebounds to go with seven points.
Dayton ranks second in 3-point field goal percentage (.364) and third in defensive rebounding (30.7) and rebounding margin (+4.9) in the A-10. Dillard leads Dayton in scoring (15.0), assists (4.6), 3-pointers made (26), free throws made (78), free throw percentage (.867), minutes (32.1) and steals (22). He is 10th in the league in scoring and fifth in both assists and free throw percentage. He has scored in double figures in all but one game this year. Oliver leads the league in overall rebounding (9.1 rpg), and he has four double-doubles this season. Benson is averaging 10.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg and is shooting .543 from the floor. The Flyers are dangerous from long range, ranking second in the A-10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.364). Rebounding is a strength as well, posting a +4.9 team margin, which is good for third in the conference.
Dayton leads the all-time series with La Salle, 24-13, and has won the last four meetings. Last season, the Flyers claimed a 79-75 triumph at UD Arena.
The Explorers shot 57 percent from the field in the second half, knocking off Richmond by a count of 71-59 last Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena. Tyrone Garland led all scorers with 17 points, while Tyreek Duren had a complete game (15 pts, 7 ast, 7 reb, 4 stl, 1 block), finishing with 998 career points. The Explorers shot 47 percent from the field and held Richmond to a 41 percent clip, including just 22 percent from behind the arc.
The Explorers are averaging 73.5 ppg, second-best in the conference. Ramon Galloway is the league's second-leading scorer (17.1 ppg) and he ranks fourth in steals per outing (2.3). He also ranks third in the A-10 in 3-point field goals/game (3.0), which ranks in the top-20 nationally. Duren comes into this contest averaging 15.1 ppg, good for ninth in the conference. Galloway and Duren are the A-10's only pair to rank in the top-10 in scoring from the same team. Duren leads the club in assists per game (3.5) as well. Garland has been great off the bench, averaging 14.3 ppg. Steve Zack (7.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Jerrell Wright (10.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg) are two of the conference's top-15 rebounders.
Both teams have a variety of scoring options and can rebound. Given the balance, expect La Salle to continue its success at home and send the Flyers back to Ohio still looking for their first conference victory.
