GAME NOTES: After becoming the first team to down Miami-Florida in league action, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons hit the road for another Atlantic Coast Conference battle with the Florida State Seminoles at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
Jeff Bzdelik's young Demon Deacons dominated their home game versus the then No. 2 Hurricanes on Saturday from start to finish to pick up an 80-65 decision. The upset lifted them to a 12-14 overall record including a 5-9 mark versus league foes. Wake Forest is just 1-8 in true road tests so far, but it came up just short and dropped a 66-63 decision at Boston College in its most recent away game.
Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles return home after sustaining a pair of losses at NC State (84-66) and Virginia Tech (80-70) in their last two appearances. Florida State, which contended for the ACC crown a season ago, has dropped to a 14-13 standing and owns a 6-8 record versus conference rivals.
This will be the second meeting of the season between these schools. Wake Forest completed a 71-46 rout of FSU on Feb. 9 in Winston-Salem. Travis McKie tallied 15 points, as the Demon Deacons connected on 49.1 percent of their field goal tries. Okara White posted 13 points for the Seminoles as they went 14-of-43 (32.6 percent) from the floor. The victory improved Wake Forest to 24-20 versus FSU.
C.J. Harris was honored as the ACC Player of the Week on Monday after pouring in all five of his attempts from beyond the arc en route to 23 points for the Demon Deacons in their big win over Miami. The second 23-point outing in his last three games increased Harris's team-leading scoring average to 15.1 ppg. The Demon Deacons' second leading scorer, McKie, went 2-of-4 from the field to net eight points, but made a big impact with 10 rebounds and five blocks. The freshman tandem of Codi Miller McIntyre (15 points, three assists) and Devin Thomas (10 points, eight rebounds, three blocks) made their mark as well.
Harris will be tested as he challenges one of the top shooting guards in the NCAA. FSU's Michael Snaer has made a name for himself as the most clutch player in college basketball by hitting big shot after big shot in the closing seconds of tight games. Snaer is leading the team with 14.0 points and 2.5 assists per game, but he was held to just eight points by Virginia Tech on Sunday. White registered a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards versus the Hokies, while Devon Bookert contributed 14 points. Bookert has played well since being inserted into the starting five, as the freshman guard has dealt out eight assists in his last home game.
Although Wake Forest completely dominated FSU in the first matchup of 2012-13 between these programs, the homecourt advantage of the Seminoles will make this one a much closer affair. The Demon Deacons really tend to struggle on the road and their attempt for the season sweep will most likely be unsuccessful against a FSU team thirsty for revenge.
