GAME NOTES: The 2K Sports Classic continues tonight with day two action, as Lehigh meets Liberty in a non-conference matchup from Lynchburg.
Lehigh turned in a dominant defensive performance in its win over William & Mary on Friday, jumping out to a 48-14 halftime lead and never looking back in a 82-47 win. Four players scored in double figures for Lehigh, led by Gabe Knutson's 16 points.
Liberty lost 73-65 in its game of the 2K Sports Classic Friday. Liberty had a couple of quality offensive performances in the loss, as David Minaya and Jesse Sanders each scored 19 points in the loss. Liberty finished the game just 2-of-11 from three-point range, while Eastern Kentucky connected on 10- of-22 from downtown.
This is the first ever meeting between Lehigh and Liberty.
Lehigh's Knutson finished 7-of-14 from the floor to earn his 16 points, and he grabbed five rebounds in the win over William & Mary. C.J. McCollum added 15 points, while Holden Greiner had a strong game from the frontcourt, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven boards in 20 minutes of action. The real theme in Friday's win, however, was Lehigh's defense. William and Mary was held to just three field goals in the first half, shooting 17.6 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and 36.7 percent for the game. Lehigh also forced 21 turnovers, and registered 12 steals and six blocks in the win.
In both scoring a game-high 19 points, Sanders and Minaya shot 7-of-12 and 8- of-14 from the field in the loss to Eastern Kentucky. While both teams shot 47.3 percent from the field, the Flames hit just two trifectas, both of which came from Minaya. Tavares Speaks came off the bench to give the Flames a spark, scoring 14 points and grabbing three boards in 30 minutes. After playing to a 28-28 tie in the first half, Liberty was outscored 45-37 in the final 20 minutes. Minaya is averaging a team-high 14.3 ppg, while Sanders averages 12.3 ppg and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest. Liberty is allowing 71 ppg through four games while netting 70 ppg on the offensive end.
Lehigh's defensive shutdown of William & Mary on a neutral floor Friday was impressive, and Liberty will have to hit outside shots to keep pace. Both of these teams have strong players on the perimeter, and Lehigh's McCollum and Liberty's Minaya provide a nice matchup in this game.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Lehigh 78, Liberty 75
