GAME NOTES: The Ohio University Bobcats, winners in five of their last seven games, pay a visit to the Winthrop Eagles tonight for a BracketBuster affair.
The Bobcats are coming off a 76-69 win at Buffalo on Tuesday. Ivo Baltic scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Ohio, which also got 24 points from D.J. Cooper. DeVaughn Washington tallied 12 points for the Bobcats, who rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit. They clawed their way back in the second frame, as they shot a staggering 73.9 percent from the floor.
The Bobcats are 4-3 all-time in BracketBuster contests after last season's win over Wright State. The last road win for Ohio in a BracketBuster game was during the 2004-05 season when the squad defeated Detroit, 66-65, and went on to capture a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Cooper leads the team with 17.1 ppg, but three other Bobcats are also averaging in double figures in Washington (12.1 ppg), Tommy Freeman (10.8 ppg) and Baltic (10.7 ppg), who is the leading rebounder at six per contest. Sophomore forward Reggie Keely provides a spark off the bench for OU, which is averaging 74.5 ppg. They team is also shooting 36.1 percent from three-point range and 70.8 percent from the foul line.
This will be the sixth meeting between the Bobcats and an opponent from the Big South. Ohio is 4-1 in previous meetings with Radford and VMI, and has never won on the road against a team from the Big South. The last win came in an 83-65 decision at home over the Highlanders during the 1996-97 season.
Winthrop had its longest winning streak of the year snapped at three last weekend as Coastal Carolina recorded a come-from behind 61-56 win. The Eagles then suffered a 70-69 overtime loss at High Point on Tuesday. Charles Corbin led the way with 17 points and 15 rebounds in defeat. Reggie Middleton added 21 points, but the Eagles struggled by going just 3-of-15 from beyond the arc and 14-of-25 at the foul line. They lost despite holding High Point to 32.2 percent shooting. Part of the problem was a whopping 26 turnovers for the Eagles, who are averaging just 64.6 ppg.
Robbie Dreher leads the balanced attack for the Eagles with 13.1 ppg, and he's followed by Middleton (10.9 ppg), Corbin (10.8 ppg) and Andre Jones (10.5 ppg). Winthrop shoots just 30.5 percent from three-point range and that could prove a big downfall for the Eagles in a game against a team that has much more offensive firepower.
