Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Dan Werner posted 16 points and nine rebounds as 13th-ranked Florida surged past Florida A&M, 80-59, at O'Connell Center.
Alex Tyus had 15 points and Vernon Macklin added 14 for the Gators (7-0), who play at Jacksonville on Friday. Erving Walker contributed 10 points and five assists.
Christopher Walker scored a game-high 19 points for the Rattlers (0-8), who try for their first win of the year at home against FIU on Thursday. Yannick Crowder recorded eight points and seven rebounds in defeat.
Florida came out strongly in the second half, turning a four-point edge into a 19-point bulge within the first five minutes. Tyus began the run with a jumper, Erving Walker hit a trey and Werner's three capped the surge for a 53-34 contest.
It was 60-37 with eight minutes played on a fastbreak lay-in from Ray Shipman and the Gators cruised home. Amin Stevens' deuce with 8:07 to play brought the Rattlers as close as they came, at 60-46, before the home team pulled away down the stretch.
The Gators led 12-4 out of the gate, but a three from Dale Hughes capped an FAMU burst and made it 16-12 with just over eight minutes played. A three- point play by Tyus upped Florida's edge to 23-12 shortly thereafter then Walker's deuce opened up a 30-16 edge for the home team with 7:36 left in the half.
Crowder's dunk on the next possession awakened the Rattlers offense, who went on a 17-4 run. David Buchanon's layup and 1-of-2 from the line by Brandon Bryant got the visitors within one before Werner's three closed out the half.
Florida has won all 11 meetings...The Gators pulled away after shooting 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the floor in the second half...Florida also owned a 41-31 edge on the glass.
