GAME NOTES: Both the Texas-Arlington Mavericks and the ULM Warhawks will attempt to halt their respective losing streaks on Thursday night when the Sun Belt Conference foes square off at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
UTA most recently dropped a hard-fought home contest with Louisiana on Feb. 6, 92-89, which caused it to fall to 9-13 overall this season and 4-6 in the Sun Belt. The Mavericks, losers of three straight, have played especially poor away from home, winning just two of 11 away bouts.
Meanwhile, ULM has dropped back-to-back games and four of its last five to situate itself at 7-11 on the campaign with a 4-6 mark in league action. The Warhawks' last contest ended in a 65-57 loss at Texas State on Feb. 6, and their return home is hardly comforting, as they've gone a modest 4-4 at Fant- Ewing Coliseum.
UTA got the best of ULM in overtime back on Jan. 9, 83-79, although the Warhawks still lead the all-time series by a convincing 46-13 margin.
The Mavericks appeared well on their way to an easy victory their last time out up by 18 with under five minutes to play, but while Louisiana ripped off a furious run down the stretch to make it a one-possession game late, they held on by the skin of their teeth in the three-point decision. They shot an impressive 48.4 percent from the field on the evening and turned 18 Louisiana turnovers into 16 points. Lonnie McClanahan shined in the victory with a career-high 31 points to go with 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Jamel Outler netted 19 points, Reger Dowell scored 11 and Brandon Edwards tallied nine points and 14 rebounds.
UTA has grown accustomed to high-scoring outputs this season, as it pours in 77.8 ppg, but it has been hindered by a terrible scoring defense, which ranks 334th in the nation in yielding 78.5 ppg. Dowell leads the way with 20.8 ppg on 72-of-191 from 3-point range (.377). Edwards is a staple in the frontcourt with 15.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 1.8 bpg, McClanahan brings 15.4 ppg and 3.9 apg to the table and Outler chips in 10.7 ppg to the balanced effort.
ULM managed to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit in its most recent game and held a one-point lead with under four minutes to play, but it was outscored down the stretch, 14-5. Although it shot an impressive 51.1 percent from the field, it was only 7-of-16 from the free-throw line and were outrebounded by a 30-23 margin. Jayon James filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Tylor Ongwae was also solid with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Warhawks typically struggle to fill up the scoreboard, as they shoot just 43.1 percent from the field for 65.0 ppg, which isn't sufficient enough to support their scoring defense (69.9 ppg). The team also struggles from beyond the arc (.318) and the free-throw line (.628) and owns a -1.5 turnover margin. Ongwae paces the squad with 16.1 ppg to go with 5.8 rpg. With Amos Olatayo (13.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg) out for the season with a torn ACL, a bigger scoring load has been put upon the shoulders of Jayon James (9.8 ppg), a well-rounded swingman who puts up 6.0 rpg, 4.4 apg and 1.2 spg.
Neither team has been a model of consistency this season, so the slight edge has to go to the Warhawks defending their home floor.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: ULM 75, Texas-Arlington 74
