GAME NOTES: The Siena Saints try to extend their current win streak to three in a row on Sunday afternoon, as they host the Iona Gaels in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Times Union Center.
The Saints have won four of their last five outings overall and are an impressive 5-1 in their own building in 2013-14, with the lone setback coming against local foe Albany in the season opener. On Friday night, the program took down visiting Marist in a 67-58 final to move to 3-2 in league action.
As for the Gaels, they too were in action two nights ago and came out on the winning side of an 84-75 final versus visiting Fairfield. The victory, the second in the last three games overall, was the fifth in six tries at home for Iona.
Iona won the most recent meeting between these two squads in early March of last season by a score of 80-61, pushing its lead in the all-time series to 53-47, although the Saints are slightly ahead at 31-28 with both teams being Division I programs since the 1976-77 campaign.
The teams will see each other again just a week from now when Iona hosts the Saints in order to complete the season series.
A.J. English scored a game-high 25 points, leading three players in double figures, as the Iona Gaels captured a nine-point win over the Fairfield Stags in MAAC play at the Hynes Athletic Center. Tre Bowman accounted for 24 points, shooting 6-of-8 behind the 3-point line, and David Laury 21 for the Gaels, as they picked up their second win in the last three outings. In addition to outscoring the visitors by a 23-11 margin at the free-throw line, the Gaels also forced 15 turnovers and traded those in for another 16 points.
Sean Armand, who missed all five of his field goal attempts and finished with just two points against the Stags, is still the overall leading scorer for the Gaels with his 19.1 ppg as he shoots 41.8 percent behind the 3-point line. English, the leading scorer in two straight and four of the last six outings for Iona, is responsible for 17.3 ppg and is even more accurate on the perimeter at 44.0 percent at the moment.
Brett Bisping registered a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as the Siena Saints topped the Marist Red Foxes by nine points in MAAC action at home two nights ago. Also scoring in double figures for the Saints were Evan Hymes with a team-best 17 points off the bench, followed by Rob Poole with 15, although the latter shot just 3-of-10 from the floor as the team picked up a second straight win and the fourth in five tries. Siena made good on only 38.6 percent from the field on the night, but compensated by forcing 15 turnovers and producing a 29-16 scoring edge at the free-throw line.
Tops on the team with 33 3-point baskets, on 83 attempts, Poole paces the Saints with his 15.5 ppg and is second on the glass with 5.8 rpg as he extends defenses with his versatility. Hymes checks in with 10.2 ppg, pitching in almost exclusively as a reserve. Helping out both Poole and Hymes at the offensive end of the floor is Marquis Wright who augments his 7.0 ppg with close to 5.7 apg.
Iona's efforts on the road thus far have fallen quite short, coming away with just two wins on an opponent's home floor, which is more than enough reason to think the Gaels might struggle again today.
