GAME NOTES: The Marist Red Foxes take aim at the season sweep of the Saint Peter's Peacocks, as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rivals are set for their rematch at the Yanitelli Center.
These teams met up less than two weeks ago in Poughkeepsie where Marist claimed a 59-48 victory after holding the Peacocks to a season-low 25.9- percent shooting effort from the floor. The all-time series is tied, 20-20, although the Red Foxes have won each of the last four meetings.
Marist's triumph over Saint Peter's two weekends ago marked the team's only victory since Dec. 16. The Red Foxes have dropped 10 of their last 11 overall, and that includes Sunday's 79-75 home loss to Siena. They have lost eight straight road games dating back to November.
Saint Peter's has endured similar struggles, as the team will try to avoid a ninth consecutive setback tonight. Most recently, the Peacocks were on the wrong end of a 61-54 final against Fairfield this past Sunday. They have not tasted victory at home since a Dec. 19 defeat of LIU Brooklyn, a span of six games.
Marist jumped out to a rather surprising 23-10 lead against Siena, but Siena closed out the half with a huge 31-10 run to take an eight-point lead into the break. The Saints, who shot 63.6 percent from the floor in the opening frame, padded their lead with several scoring spurts in the second stanza. Chavaughn Lewis (14.6 ppg) led the way for Marist with a game-high 23 points in defeat, as he also tallied eight rebounds and four steals. Senior Devin Price, the team's leading scorer (14.7 ppg), provided a spark with 18 points in his return from a two-game absence due to an ankle injury. Isaiah Morton added 15 points, and Adam Kemp recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four blocks. Although the end result was still a loss, the Red Foxes just about doubled their point total from last Thursday's 71-37 loss to Fairfield, as the offense was undoubtedly more fluid with Price back on the floor.
Saint Peter's has not eclipsed the 75-point mark since that win over LIU six weeks ago. So if the Red Foxes are able to get out on the break like they did their last time out, it would certainly spell bad news for the Peacocks. Down by 12 with two minutes to play against Fairfield, Saint Peter's cut it close with an 8-0 run, but the team simply ran out of gas at the end. Yvon Raymond scored a career-high 19 points in the loss. He scored 14 of those points in the second half with the Peacocks attempting to rally, and he also grabbed seven rebounds. However, Raymond (10.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg) was also the team's only double-digit scorer, as Saint Peter's was unable to overcome a 39-25 rebounding margin, which included a 15-8 edge for the Stags on the offensive glass. Leading scorer Desi Washington (13.7 ppg) had a rough afternoon, finishing with only five points on 2-of-8 shooting.
As the Peacocks displayed once again on Sunday, it is awfully tough to win when one of their top two scorers has an off game. Even if Washington rebounds with a much stronger performance this time around, keep in mind Marist won the first meeting without its top scorer in Price.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Marist 67, Saint Peter's 63
