GAME NOTES: A pair of teams aiming to snap losing streaks meet on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham when the Georgia Southern Eagles visit the Samford Bulldogs in Southern Conference action.
Samford heads into its conference opener looking to put an end to a six-game skid. The Bulldogs haven't won since a 59-40 home victory over Martin Methodist on Nov. 12. Perimeter defense was the problem for Samford in its most recent loss, 86-62 at home against Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday.
Georgia Southern is coming off a 55-50 home loss to Elon on Wednesday. The loss was the second straight and dropped the Eagles two games under .500 at 2-4.
The Eagles have won 15 of the last 19 meetings and last year both games were decided by five points or less.
Tre Bussey led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points on 7- of-12 shooting, but it wasn't enough against the Phoenix last time out. C.J. Reed added 13 points, while Eric Ferguson put together a double-double off the bench with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Cleon Roberts, who averages 9.7 points, was limited to three. Ferguson (13.7 ppg) leads the team in scoring and rebounding (8.3 rpg). Junior forward Marvin Baynham (4.7 ppg) had just one point in the Elon game. Junior guard Bussey (11.2 ppg) and Reed (9.2 ppg) round out the starting five.
Florida Gulf Coast, which bolted to a 20-5 lead, went 10-of-18 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore guard Raijon Kelly's 13 points. Forward Tim Williams tallied 12 points, while Jaylen Beckham ended with 10. Williams paces the team with 15.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest, while Kelly averages 13.8 points. Forward Clide Geffrard Jr. (7.9 ppg), guard Connor Miller (7.3 ppg) and freshman point guard Russell Wilson (2.4 ppg) round out the starting five, while forward Tyler Hood (7.8 ppg) is the key contributor off the bench on a team that fields nine underclassmen. Samford is just one of two teams in the SoCon that doesn't have a single senior on its roster.
The Bulldogs are in a major slump right now and despite getting this game at home, Samford's woes should continue as the Eagles get the win here.
