GAME NOTES: The Utah Utes and UNC-Asheville Bulldogs square off in the Battle 4 Atlantis seventh-place game tonight in the Bahamas.
The Utes got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time on Friday when they ran into a red-hot Massachusetts squad. The Minutemen put on an offensive clinic against Utah on their way to a 89-75 victory. The loss to UMass was the fourth in a row for Utah. Coach Larry Krystkowiak's squad has a lot to prove going forward. The Utes allowed the Minutemen to shoot 50.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range just one night after Massachusetts could not buy a bucket. Offensively, Utah actually outshot their opponent as it made good on 60 percent of its field goal attempts. The Utes hurt themselves in the loss by turning the ball over 18 times and by shooting just 60 percent from the foul line.
UNC-Asheville took the College of Charleston to the wire in its second round loss. The Bulldogs came up just short in the back-and-forth contest as they were trailing 68-66 when the final buzzer sounded. The loss dropped UNCA to 2-4 on the season. The Bulldogs were also competitive in their opening round game as they lost to nationally ranked Connecticut by just 10 points. Despite losing the game to Charleston, UNCA won the battle of the boards 36-32.
This is the first all-time meeting between Utah and UNCA in men's basketball.
Josh Watkins led the Utes in the Massachusetts game with 16 points and seven assists. Watkins has now scored in double figures in every game this season. Jason Washburn bounced back from his disappearing act against Harvard with 11 points on the Minutemen. Freshman Kareem Storey had a career-high 12 points in Friday's loss.
Matt Dickey led the Bulldogs in their recent setback to the Cougars with 20 points. Dickey is a consistent scorer and aggressive player overall. Chris Stephenson scored a season-high 19 points in the loss to Charleston as he shot 8-of-15 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.
Both teams are hungry for a win after Friday. Although the Battle 4 Atlantis Championship is out of reach, both these teams have a lot to play for in this early season as they fight to gain a winning record.
