GAME NOTES: The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks will square off in the first round of the Jim Thorpe Classic in Laramie, Wyoming.
Louisiana Tech is 1-1 after losing to Texas-Arlington 68-61 in its last outing. The Bulldogs opened the season with a win over Mississippi College. Michael White's squad is scoring 76.5 points per game on 42.2 percent shooting from the floor and 31.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs are holding their opponents to 69 points per game on 40.3 percent shooting from the field. Louisiana Tech has only shot 20 free throws in its first two games while its opponents have attempted 69 from the charity stripe.
MDES is off to a disappointing 1-4 start after being dismantled 92-50 by Kansas State in its last outing. It was the third-straight loss for the Hawks as they lost by double-digits to Tulane and Rice before being downed by the Wildcats. Frankie Allen's team began the season with a loss to George Washington before finding its first victory in an overtime thriller over American. UMES is averaging only 53 points per game on 33.6 percent shooting. The Hawks have been struggling defensively as they have allowed their opponents to score eighty plus points in each of their last two games.
This will be the first meeting between Louisiana Tech and UMES.
Trevor Gaskins was a role player in his first three seasons of college basketball at Ole Miss. Gaskins wanted a change and he has found it at Louisiana Tech as he is now the big man on campus. Gaskins is leading the Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding with averages of 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as he is attempting almost three times as many shots as he did with Ole Miss. Codarius Johnson has stepped up his game as well as he is scoring 13.5 points per game in his sophomore season after averaging just 4.3 points per game in 2010-2011.
UMES is led by its sophomore guard Louis Bell. After a five point outing in the team's opener, Bell has scored in double-figures every game since, including a 21 point performance in the win over American. The Hawks have welcomed Percy Woods, a transfer from Harcum College, to the team this year. Woods's game has translated well to the Division I level as he is scoring 10 points and dishing out 4.4 assists per game while running the point for MDES.
UMES has struggled early on as its losses have not even been competitive. Louisiana Tech has yet to be tested. The Hawks could start inching back towards a winning record if they can find a way to contain Gaskins and Johnson. However, that is not going to be easy.
