But it appears the competition for the team's second and third receiver spots behindLarry Fitzgerald couldn't be more wide open, with free-agent holdovers Steve Breaston and Early Doucet looking like they could get a serious run for their money from second-year pros Andre Roberts and Stephen Williams.
We hear both Roberts, who got off to a shaky start as a rookie but finished strong, and Williams, who did just the opposite, have stood out in recent players-only workouts. Doucet, meanwhile, continues to rehab from offseason surgery '" he was placed on injured reserve last season after suffering a hip flexor injury against Carolina in Week 15 '" and has not been attending any workouts. Both Doucet and Breaston have health issues that continue to be cause for concern [the duo missed nine games combined last season].

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is only under contract for one more season, and the Cardinals and Fitzgerald failed to come to terms on a contract extension prior to the lockout.
Based on the way things have gone since future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner left town, I wouldn't be surprised if Fitzgerald has already begun packing his bags.
When the Cardinals selected Matt Leinart with the No. 10 overall pick in 2006, he was supposed to step in and be the quarterback of the future. We all know how that turned out. Leinart is now a career backup riding pine down in Houston.
Since Leinart the Cardinals have had nothing but failed attempts'"excluding Kurt Warner'"at finding a long term solution. John Skelton, Derek Anderson, Max Hall, and Richard Bartel all took snaps under center in 2010 in rotating fashion.
Sometime in early-December I saw a change in Fitzgerald's on field demeanor. Normally a vibrant leader on the field, Fitzgerald seemed annoyed by the dysfunction at quarterback.
"Larry Fitz is under contract with the Cards until 2012, but he hasn't talked about his future in Arizona," I said back on December 13, 2010. "With no quarterback in sight, I see no reason Fitzgerald wouldn't want to leave the desert as soon as possible. If Cardinals' management know he isn't likely to re-sign after the 2011 season, why not listen to trade offers? He's worth a first round pick in my book."
Now these are just my observations, but I spent a lot of time covering the NFC West last season and truly believe Fitzgerald is on his way out.
In an interview with Jack Magruder of FoxSports.com, Fitzgerald was asked which quarterback he'd like to see the Cardinals go after, and he said, "Anybody that's going to help us win. That's really how I feel."
The Cardinals sit with the No. 5 overall pick in the draft which likely would land them either Auburn's Cam Newton or Missouri's Blaine Gabbert, but Fitzgerald doesn't seem convinced, although he did give high praise to both Newton and Gabbert in the interview, but at the same time seemed bitter.
"I would doubt that we would draft a quarterback that high. I would doubt it," Fitzgerald told Magruder. "But, who am I? I'm just a player. Management hasn't told me if they are going to go in any direction."

Five tantalizing candidates:
1. Chicago Bears
As much as Jay Cutler got blamed for the Bears not defending home field in the NFC Championship, the Bears lack of receiving talent was never more evident. This team needs a play-maker like Fitz. And if there is anyone who can pile up the fantasy stats with a wide receiver, it's Cutler (see: Marshall, Brandon).
2. St. Louis Rams
The Rams were a win away from hosting a playoff game this season and winning the NFC West, all with rookie quarterback Sam Bradford at the helm nonetheless. This team is trending upward now. Running back Steven Jackson is not getting any younger and could use a player like Fitz to take some of the pressure off his shoulders.
