NFL Game Summary - Jacksonville at NY Jets

(Sunday, November 15th)

Final Score: Jacksonville 24, NY Jets 22

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Josh Scobee kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 24-22 victory over the New York Jets at the Meadowlands.

David Garrard threw for 221 yards with a touchdown and ran for a score for the Jaguars (5-4), who have won two straight and three of their last four. Maurice Jones-Drew also had a big game with 123 yards rushing and a touchdown on 24 carries, while also making a smart play on the final drive.

The Jets moved in front by one with 5:04 to play on a one-yard touchdown run by Thomas Jones, but the two-point conversion attempt failed and the Jaguars followed with an 80-yard drive to steal it away.

An 11-yard pass to Zach Miller on 3rd-and-1 moved the chains early and Garrard found Mike Thomas for 15 on 3rd-and-9 soon after. A 33-yard pass to Marcedes Lewis followed and the Jets called their final timeout with 1:48 to play with the Jags on the New York 10-yard line.

The Jets were trying to let Jones-Drew score on the next play, but the veteran back alertly went down at the one-yard line. Garrard took a knee twice to wind the clock down to three seconds and the Jaguars took a timeout to set up Scobee's winning kick, which sailed cleanly through the uprights as the clock ticked away.

"We knew they were pretty much going to let us score," said Jones-Drew. "So the coach said to just take a knee. Sorry to my fantasy owners, I apologize."

Garrard completed 16-of-26 passes without an interception for Jacksonville. Thomas had four receptions for 46 yards and Mike Sims-Walker added three catches for 49 yards with a touchdown.

Jones finished with 77 yards on the ground, ending a streak of three straight 100-yard games, as the Jets (4-5) lost their second straight game. New York, coming off its bye, is just 1-5 after starting the season with three consecutive wins.

"We're not impressive," said Jets receiver Braylon Edwards. "We're not scaring anybody, we're not intimidating anybody coming on to the field. So, that 3-0 start is a wash. That's over with. We have to go out there and play football from start to finish."

Mark Sanchez completed 16-of-30 passes for 212 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in defeat.

The Jets pulled within 21-16 in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Jay Feely and got the ball back a couple of minutes later after a Jacksonville punt.

Sanchez then directed a 16-play, 77-yard drive for the go-ahead score. New York converted a trio of third downs, including a 16-yard pass to Braylon Edwards on 3rd-and-9, but Jones was stopped short on 3rd-and-2 from the Jags' 16. The Jets elected to go for the first down and Shonn Greene took a pitch around the left end 14 yards to the one before Jones leaped over the pile for the touchdown. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete, giving Jacksonville a chance to win it with a field goal.

Sanchez went deep for Jerricho Cotchery on the first offensive play of the game, but was instead picked off by Rashean Mathis, who raced 29 yards to the Jacksonville 45. It was all Jones-Drew from there, as he carried on all five plays and capped the short series with a burst through the middle for a 33- yard score.

The Jets answered with a 32-yard field goal from Feely, then took advantage of good field position after Scobee hit the left upright on a 49-yard field goal try. A 32-yard pass from Sanchez to Cotchery, plus a roughing the passer penalty, keyed the 61-yard, five-play drive that ended with a seven-yard TD hookup between the same duo for a 10-3 New York lead late in the first quarter.

Jacksonville followed with an 11-play, 70-yard touchdown march, capped by Garrard's 11-yard touchdown run just over four minutes into the second quarter. Garrard then hit Sims-Walker with a 26-yard touchdown pass to complete a 10-play, 86-yard drive for a 21-10 edge.

Feely kicked a 37-yard field goal in the final minute of the half to pull the Jets within eight at the break.

After a series of punts to start the second half, the teams combined for three turnovers in a span of five plays.

The Jets' second possession of the third quarter started in Jacksonville territory but ended in disaster. After a holding penalty wiped out a 10-yard run on first down, Sanchez threw a short pass directly into the hands of defensive end Quentin Groves, who had a clear field to the end zone but stumbled toward the goal line and fell at the four. The Jags were unable to score, as Garrard and Jones-Drew mishandled the exchange on the second play and New York recovered at its own three.

On the second play after the turnover, Sanchez hit Edwards in stride for a long gain, but Mathis punched the ball loose and the Jaguars recovered at their own 47. Jacksonville quickly punted it back and the Jets ate up more than seven minutes and capped a 60-yard drive with Feely's 40-yarder in the first minute of the fourth quarter to pull New York within 21-16.
