Description: Athletics reliever Brian Fuentes has been designated for assignment.
Insight: Fuentes hasn't been effective this season (2-2, 6.85 ERA, five saves in eight chances) but he might still get a few job offers because of his impressive resume (204 saves in 644 career appearances).
6/28/2012 7:31:00 PM
Description: The A's could be looking to trade relief pitcher Brian Fuentes before the July 31 trade deadline according to Jon Heyman from CBS Sports.
Insight: Despite his 204 career saves, there probably won't be a big market for Fuentes, the owner of a 6.85 season ERA and three blown saves in just eight chances this season. Fuentes will turn 37 in August and he is still owed over $3 million on his current deal, further complicating the A's efforts to trade the once-dominant closer.
6/9/2012 11:05:00 PM
Description: The A's will move to a closer by committee following Brian Fuentes' shaky outing Friday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Fuentes (2-2, 5.24 ERA) blew the save and picked up his second loss of the season. Now he'll have to share the closer's role with Ryan Cook (1-1, 0.64) and Grant Balfour (1-1, 3.34).
5/13/2012 12:59:00 PM
Description: Oakland reliever Brian Fuentes appears to have won the closer's role from Grant Balfour.
Insight: Fuentes, with 201 career saves, has an up and down history as a closer. he led the league with 48 saves for the Angels in 2009, but always has a high walk total. He has a win and two saves in his last four outings. If Fuentes fails, the next in line for a shot at the ninth inning job is Ryan Cook.
3/20/2012 1:59:00 PM
Description: Brian Fuentes appears to have lost out on the open Oakland A's closer role to Grant Balfour.
Insight: Fuentes, who owns 199 career saves including 12 last year when Andrew Bailey was hurt, looks like he'll be a setup man for Grant Balfour. His fantasy value is minimal unless Balfour gets injured or fails in the ninth-inning role.
5/4/2011 10:50:00 AM
Description: Brian Fuentes gave up three runs in the 9th to the Indians on Tuesday on four hits and a walk and his ERA ballooned to 5.28.
Insight: Fuentes was a decent fill in and the benefactor of Andrew Bailey's absence but Bailey's return means Fuentes' value is about to diminish.
4/13/2011 6:22:00 PM
Description: Brian Fuentes notched his fifth save in Wednesdays win over the White sox.
Insight: He is doing a fine job filling in for Andrew Bailey. If you need saves cheap, he's your guy. (at least until Bailey gets back).
4/7/2011 6:28:00 PM
Description: Brian Fuentes pitched a scoreless ninth and got the save against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Insight: Fuentes will get the save chances until Bailey comes back. Pickup Fuentes as the handcuff to Bailey, or if you are desperate for saves and have no other options.
4/3/2011 6:11:00 AM
Description: Pitching in the ninth inning of a tie game last night, Brian Fuentes allowed three runs (two earned) and took the loss.
Insight: He should still be part of the temporary closer picture in Oakland but he may have opened the door for Grant Balfour a little wider last night.

Insight: He said that he felt great. Bailey doesn't need to be stretched out too much but it will still take at least 3 more weeks before he is ready for game action with Oakland. Look for Brian Fuentes to get most of the saves until that time.
1/18/2011 12:02:00 AM
Description: HardballTalk.com reports that Fuentes has signed a two-year deal with Oakland.
Insight: Fuentes might get a save chance here and there, but it'll take another injury to Andrew Bailey to make him the closer for the A's. (RapidDraft.com)
1/17/2011 5:08:00 PM
Description: Brian Fuentes has finalized his two-year deal with the A's. SOURCE: AP
Insight: He will be part of a deep bullpen and won't have much of a chance for saves. That makes him an AL-Only lineup filler and not much more. Oakland can make a case for having the best, deepest bullpen in baseball at this point.

Description: Brian Fuentes is close to signing a contract with Oakland. SOURCE: MLB FANHOUSE
Insight: We are hearing that it is a two-year deal with the possibility for a third year. He will get about $5 million per season with the chance to earn more if he closes. The A's now have a very deep bullpen and would likely use a closing committee if Andrew Bailey ever goes on the DL.
1/15/2011 3:15:00 PM
Description: Oakland would like to add Brian Fuentes to their bullpen. SOURCE: FOXSPORTS
Insight: Their bullpen would be outstanding with Bailey, Wuertz, Balfour and Fuentes, not to mention Devine and other young relievers. It would be enough to keep them in the race in the AL West and could push them ahead of L.A. in many pre-season predictions. Fuentes may be looking for a team that offers more save opportunities.
1/15/2011 7:03:00 AM
Description: Toronto is still interested in signing Brian Fuentes. SOURCE: JON MOROSI
Insight: It seems like Toronto and Tampa Bay are the two teams most interested in Fuentes and Jon Rauch so they might end up with one in each city. Fuentes would be a great fit in Toronto, where he could be their top lefty and share saves with Octavio Dotel.
1/10/2011 11:00:00 AM
Description: Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports the Pirates are no longer interested in Fuentes.
Insight: Fuentes' asking price may have been too much for the Pirates, which could be expected. (RapidDraft.com)
1/7/2011 7:22:00 PM
Description: The Jays are interested in Brian Fuentes. SOURCE: NEWSDAY
Insight: He would be a good signing for them, as he could get some saves and share the job with Octavio Dotel. He would prefer to get a full-time closer role but that might not happen.
12/30/2010 7:50:00 PM
Description: The Rays have plenty of interest in Brian Fuentes and they are considering him as their 2011 closer. SOURCE: TAMPABAY.COM
Insight: This is a situation to keep a close eye on. In a set-up role Fuentes is barely worth owning in AL-Only leagues but if he ends up in Tampa Bay he would be a middle tier closer option.
9/9/2010 9:00:00 AM
Description: Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN.com reports, via Twitter, that an MRI on Fuentes' back revealed no significant damage.
Insight: Fuentes is battling soreness, and could return to the Twins' bullpen fairly soon as long as he avoids any setbacks. (RapidDraft.com)
9/8/2010 6:07:00 PM
Description: Brian Fuentes underwent an MRI on his sore back. SOURCE: PMAC21 ON TWITTER
Insight: Fuentes has been out about a week and will likely miss at least a few more days. He said that he is only 70% right now.
