Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy dominated Miami for his third career shutout Saturday night.
Insight: McCarthy gave up three hits and walked two to win his first game of the season. McCarthy was battered for 61 hits and 30 earned runs in his first 40 innings this year, but he has held opponents scoreless over 17 innings in his last two outings.

5/12/2013 7:54:00 PM
Description: D'Backs righthander Brandon McCarthy didn't allow a run in eight innings Sunday against Philadelphia.
Insight: Unfortunately, Arizona's bullpen gave up four in the next two frames to lose 4-2 in extra innings. McCarthy (0-3, 5.63 ERA) hasn't won a game since last August. That's a span of nine starts without a win.

Cold4/16/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy has a 7.47 ERA and 2.04 WHIP through three starts with his new team.
Insight: McCarthy has allowed 28 hits in just 15 2/3 innings, and he made it through just four innings Tuesday against New York. The right-hander has posted an ERA in the low threes in each of the last two seasons, so we're willing to give him more time.

2/27/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy fanned four batters in two innings Wednesday in his first game action since taking a line drive off the head nearly six months ago when he was with Oakland.
Insight: McCarthy had to undergo emergency brain surgery last season after being struck in the head. He signed a two-year deal with Arizona in December and slots in as the fourth starter behind Ian Kennedy, former Athletics teammate Trevor Cahill and Wade Miley. McCarthy induces a lot of ground balls, which should help him keep the ball in the park at Chase Field.

12/7/2012 6:48:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with righthander Brandon McCarthy on a new two-year, $15.5 million deal according to the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro.
Insight: A solid acquisition for the D'Backs, who are also said to be pursuing James Shields in a potential four-team swap. If McCarthy can stay healthy, he should be just as good as he was a year ago (8-6, 3.24 ERA in 18 starts).

12/2/2012 11:28:00 AM
Description: Nick Piecoro from the Arizona Republic says the Diamondbacks have shown interest in free agent starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: McCarthy was recently cleared to resume throwing just three months after suffering a horrific head injury, so he should be ready to go again by the start of the 2013 season. Most think McCarthy will return to Oakland but we wouldn't rule out Arizona just yet.

11/14/2012 9:08:00 PM
Description: Free agent starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy has been cleared to resume baseball activities. McCarthy suffered a serious head injury after being struck by a line drive in early September.
Insight: All signs point to McCarthy being at full strength again by the start of next season. He went 8-6 in 2012 with a 3.24 ERA in 111 innings.

11/7/2012 9:29:00 PM
Description: The Cubs are looking at free agent starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer.
Insight: Chicago dealt pitchers Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster before the trade deadline last season so the team obviously has a few holes to fill in the rotation. The Cubs have also shown an interest in former Brewers and Blue Jays righthander Shaun Marcum (7-4, 3.70 ERA for Milwaukee in 2012).

11/3/2012 8:46:00 PM
Description: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that free agent righthander Brandon McCarthy is drawing lots of interest on the open market.
Insight: Injuries derailed McCarthy's 2012 season but at age 29, the groundball specialist still has plenty left to offer. McCarthy doesn't strike many hitters out (just 73 in 111 innings last season) but his consistently low ERA (3.29 since 2011) is helpful for fantasy purposes.

Description: Oakland is expected to re-sign starter Brandon McCarthy during the offseason. SOURCE: San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: McCarthy is coming off a serious head injury but the expectation is that he'll be fulling recovered by the time spring training rolls around in February. The 6-foot-7 righthander finished the year with eight wins and a 3.24 ERA in 18 starts.

10/3/2012 10:03:00 PM
Description: Shockingly, the A's haven't ruled out the possibility of bringing back starter Brandon McCarthy for the postseason. McCarthy took a vicious hit to the head on a line drive last month, fracturing his skull and causing a brain hemorrhage.
Insight: McCarthy (8-6, 3.24 ERA) has been cleared to play catch but it's still pretty unlikely that he'll be ready to pitch in a game anytime soon. For now, Oakland will rely on starters Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone and A.J. Griffin as they begin their first round playoff series against Detroit.

9/11/2012 10:13:00 PM
Description: A's righthander Brandon McCarthy was released from the hospital on Tuesday. McCarthy had been in the hospital for six days after a line drive struck him in the head, fracturing his skull and causing a brain contusion.
Insight: McCarthy (8-6, 3.24 ERA) was in pretty rough shape a few days earlier so obviously this is very encouraging news. He won't be pitching again this season but if his recovery goes well we could see him back in action by the time spring training rolls around in February.

9/9/2012 10:43:00 AM
Description: According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Athletics trainer Nick Paparesta said starter Brandon McCarthy (head) might be moved out of the critical care unit to a transitional unit soon.
Insight: McCarthy was struck in the head with a line drive several days ago and had to undergo surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. McCarthy had an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and a skull fracture but he was tweeting from his hospital bed Saturday and is reportedly "progressing nicely." The pitcher is out for the year, but that is a secondary concern at this time.

9/6/2012 7:36:00 PM
Description: Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy reportedly had surgery last night after taking a line drive off the back of his head. McCarthy's surgery included the evacuation of an epidural hemorrhage and stabilization of a skull fracture.
Insight: According to the A's Twitter account, McCarthy had a CT Scan Thursday that demonstrated the epidural hemorrage had subsided. The right-hander is currently resting in the critical care unit of the hospital. He's awake and has shown signs of improvement. It seems unlikely that he'll pitch again this season, but that's the least important thing right now.

9/6/2012 10:02:00 AM
Description: Oakland righthander Brandon McCarthy never lost consciousness after taking a line drive to the head Wednesday versus the Angels. He stayed overnight in an Oakland hospital and now the team is waiting on results from a CT scan before determining McCarthy's status for his next start, scheduled for September 11th in Anaheim.
Insight: McCarthy (8-6, 3.24 ERA) has pitched well this season and the A's need all the help they can get as they fight for a wild card spot, but it's doubtful he'll be able to return in time to make his scheduled start next Tuesday.

9/5/2012 5:22:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brandon McCarthy took a line drive off the back of his head Wednesday and had to leave his start.
Insight: McCarthy sat on the mound and rubbed his head for several minutes before walking off under his own power. The right-hander looked shaken up by the ordeal and it's possible he has a concussion.

8/10/2012 7:43:00 PM
Description: The A's activated righthanded pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the disabled list on Friday.
Insight: He'll get the start tonight against the White Sox. It's McCarthy's first appearance at the major league level since June 19 when he shut out the Padres over seven innings.

8/8/2012 10:05:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will return to the rotation Friday, according to the team's official website.
Insight: McCarthy will take the rotation spot of A.J. Griffin, who just went on the DL with shoulder problems of his own.

8/5/2012 11:10:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) dominated in his latest minor league rehab start Saturday, fanning nine in six scoreless innings with Triple-A Sacramento.
Insight: McCarthy seems ready to return after clearing this latest hurdle. The A's have a vacancy in their rotation after A.J. Griffin went down Saturday with a shoulder injury, and McCarthy will likely be the one to fill it.

7/31/2012 8:46:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will make another rehab start, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
Insight: McCarthy allowed six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings Monday with Triple-A Sacramento. He was initially trying to make it back without a rehab start, but he'll need at least one more.
