Description: Going into Monday's game, Nationals closer Rafael Soriano had allowed just five runs in 40 innings this season (1.10 ERA), but he gave up four runs in a blown save at Miami.
Insight: Soriano's hiccup cost Jordan Zimmermann a win. He's blown four saves in 29 chances this season, but he still has a 1.96 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP even after Monday's game.

5/16/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Nationals closer Rafael Soriano has nine saves and a 1.06 ERA this season.
Insight: Soriano's WHIP is actually higher than his ERA at 1.12. The right-hander has struck out 15 batters in 17 innings, though he hasn't fanned anyone in his last four games.

Cold8/18/2013 9:26:00 AM
Description: Washington closer Rafael Soriano blew his second straight save Saturday in a win over the Braves.
Insight: Soriano, who coughed up the lead by allowing a two-run homer to Jason Heyward in the bottom of the ninth, has now given up at least one run in each of his last three appearances. This blown save was especially costly as Washington was forced to waste starter Dan Haren in extra innings. The Nationals, arguably the league's biggest disappointment this season, are now two games under .500. They're eight and a half games behind in the National League Wild Card race.

8/15/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: Nats closer Rafael Soriano got roughed up Thursday in a blown save against the Giants.
Insight: Pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez deposited Soriano's two-out offering into the seats to give San Francisco a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth. It was Soriano's fifth blown save of the season. The tough outing raised his ERA from 2.92 to 3.40.

4/24/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: Nationals reliever Rafael Soriano is doubtful for Wednesday's game against St. Louis while being at home for the birth of his child.
Insight: The Nationals have plenty of closing option if Soriano isn't available with Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard.

4/20/2013 8:34:00 PM
Description: Nationals reliever Rafael Soriano picked up his sixth save Saturday against the Mets.
Insight: Soriano dealt with a tweak in his leg earlier this month and allowed two homers and four runs in back-to-back appearances on April 6 and 9, but he has thrown four straight scoreless innings.

4/10/2013 6:06:00 PM
Description: Nationals reliever Rafael Soriano is dealing with a "little tweak in his leg," according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
Insight: Soriano has allowed a homer and two runs in each of his last two outings, so this might explain that. Drew Storen is the next man up if Soriano needs a few days off.

3/22/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: Nationals reliever Rafael Soriano will return to the mound on Saturday after having root canal, according to Nats writer Mark Zuckerman.
Insight: Soriano signed a two-year, big money contract with Washington this offseason after saving 42 games with the Yankees last year. He is expected to close for Washington and has great upside for a team that could win 95-100 games, but beware that if he stumbles the Nats have other talented options in Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard.

Insight: Soriano signed a two-year, $28 million contract with Washington last month after saving 42 games with the Yankees last season. He is expected to close for Washington and has great upside for a team that could win 95-100 games. Nats pitchers saved 51 games last season, fourth-most in the MLB.

1/16/2013 5:03:00 PM
Description: The Nationals have landed former Yankees relief pitcher Rafael Soriano. The two sides have come to an agreement on a new two-year, $28 million contract.
Insight: Soriano will now anchor what was already considered one of baseball's finest bullpens. Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard both pitched well in 2012 but neither will have much fantasy value going forward now that Soriano has been tabbed as the ninth inning man.

11/29/2012 11:05:00 AM
Description: Free agent closer Rafael Soriano's agent Scott Boras has been in touch with Tigers owner Mike Illitch about a new deal according to MLB.com's Peter Gammons.
Insight: If Soriano ends up in Detroit, it would likely be at the expense of current Tigers closer Jose Valverde. Papa Grande pitched erratically during the postseason and was eventually benched in favor of Phil Coke during the ALCS. Soriano pitched for the Yankees in 2012 but is unlikely to return now that Mariano Rivera has agreed to return for another season.

10/31/2012 8:42:00 PM
Description: Reliever Rafael Soriano has opted out of his contract with the Yankees and is now a free agent.
Insight: Soriano wants to be a closer and he wouldn't be guaranteed that opportunity in New York unless Mariano Rivera retires. He finished the 2012 season with 42 saves in 46 save opportunities.

6/1/2012 4:40:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Rafael Soriano will remain in the closer role for New York even after David Robertson returns from an oblique injury.
Insight: Soriano is 6-for-6 in save chances this season. Assuming he doesn't have several meltdowns before Robertson returns in two weeks, he'll hold onto the job.

5/15/2012 8:39:00 PM
Description: Rafael Soriano will serve as the team's closer while David Robertson is out with a strained oblique.
Insight: Rafael Soriano is just two years removed from being an elite closer for Tampa Bay so he should excel in this role. Soriano has amassed 92 saves over 11 major league seasons.

5/26/2011 7:51:00 AM
Description: Yankees setup man Rafael Soriano has an inflamed ligament in his right elbow that could keep the former All-Star out up to two months. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: Look for Joba Chamberlain to move into the 8th inning role, where he could possibly vulture a few saves in Mariano Rivera needs a night off.

5/25/2011 8:29:00 AM
Description: Yankees setup man Rafael Soriano is going to be examined by renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews after having a second MRI on his sore right elbow. The Yankees would not reveal the results of the exam until he sees Andrews and the club's doctors on Wednesday. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: If you gambled on Soriano as a cheap source of 10+ saves it appears you will not be rewarded for your risky pick. On the bright side you don't have to pay him like the Yankees do.

5/16/2011 10:17:00 AM
Description: Reliever Rafael Soriano will not be available to pitch in the Yankees' upcoming two-game series against the Rays, as he is experiencing recurring tightness in his right elbow. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Anytime you hear "elbow stiffness" you have to be concerned; this is a good week to bench Soriano.

5/11/2011 12:32:00 PM
Description: Rafael Soriano worked the ninth inning for his first save of the season Thursday night against the Rays.
Insight: It wasn't the spectacular outing we've ever seen from Soriano (1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER) but it got the job done. Soriano got the save chance because David Robertson was unavailable after pitching two days in a row on Tuesday and Wednesday. Soriano might get a few more save opportunities here and there, but probably not enough for you to really rely on him in fantasy. Soriano is owned in 23.6 percent of fantasy leagues at the moment.

5/11/2011 5:13:00 AM
Description: Yankees relief pitcher Rafael Soriano was not available for Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals because of pain in his right pitching elbow, and will have an MRI on the elbow on Wednesday. "He came in today, his elbow is a little tender, he'll have a precautionary MRI tomorrow," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, following his team's 3-1 victory. "He talked to Dr. [Christopher] Ahmad [the team's head physician], Sori felt good -- they don't think there's much more, and we're gonna make sure." SOURCE: ESPN.com
Insight: Anytime you hear "elbow" and "MRI" in the same sentence you ave to be concerned. Consider Soriano to be day-to-day until the Yankees provide a status update.

5/10/2011 10:24:00 PM
Description: Rafael Soriano completed the ninth inning Thursday night for his first save of the season.
Insight: It wasn't the most spectacular outing we've ever seen from Soriano (1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER). David Robertson was unavailable Thursday but he's still the closer for the team's forseeable future.
