American League Game Summary - Kansas City at Detroit
(Wednesday, May 2nd)
Final Score: Kansas City 3, Detroit 2
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Chris Getz slapped a go-ahead RBI single in the
top of the ninth inning Wednesday as the Royals downed the Tigers, 3-2, in the
finale of a weather-shortened two-game series at Comerica Park.
Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez carried a no-hitter into the fifth before a
two-out double ended it. Jose Mijares and Kevin Herrera also held the Tigers
scoreless but Aaron Crow served up a game-tying two-run blast to Brennan
Boesch in the bottom of the eighth.
The Tigers scored the go-ahead run off Joaquin Benoit (0-1), who entered for
Detroit starter Justin Verlander.
"With this lineup, I don't think we're really worried about it," remarked
Verlander about the Tigers offense. "That's not my job to worry about run
support. My job's to win baseball games and obviously two runs was too many to
give up today."
Benoit retired the first hitter, but served up a double to Mike Moustakas, who
quickly advanced to third on a ground out before Getz plated him with an RBI
single to give the Royals their 3-2 lead.
Tim Collins (1-0) got the win after retiring the final two hitters in the
eighth while Jonathan Broxton tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to record
his fourth save of the season.
"We got two runs off of Verlander and kind of gave it up towards the end,"
said Moustakas. "But we were able to battle back, and get some big hits and we
were able to score a run, push it across and get Broxton in the game and close
the door."
A leadoff walk to Jarrod Dyson came back to haunt Verlander in the top of the
first. Dyson stole second and came around to score on a double by Eric Hosmer
to give Kansas City an early 1-0 lead.
Alex Avila's two-out double broke up Sanchez's no-hit bid in the fifth, and
the Tigers loaded the bases on consecutive walks before Sanchez retired Austin
Jackson to keep Detroit off the board.
The Royals added another run in the sixth as Alex Gordon opened the frame with
a single into center field and Billy Butler was plunked by Verlander. Both
runners advanced on a ground out from Hosmer, before Jeff Francoeur plated
Gordon with a ground out to give the Royals a 2-0 edge.
Crow got the Royals out of trouble in the seventh, inducing a ground ball from
Ramon Santiago with runners on second and third before serving up Boesch's
game-tying homer in the eighth.
