Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Alfonso Soriano, Bryan LaHair and Jeff Baker
each homered as the Chicago Cubs hammered the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-0, in the
opener of a three-game set at Miller Park.
Ryan Dempster (1-3), who took a perfect game into the sixth, got his first win
after scattering three hits over seven shutout innings. Dempster struck out
three and walked none, and moved to 16-6 lifetime against the Brewers.
"(Demptser) did a great job obviously with five perfect innings," Cubs manager
Dale Sveum said. "To finally schneid was nice, he's pitched pretty well all
year. For some reason at Miller Park against the Brewers he does the job."
David DeJesus drove in one and scored three times while Steve Clevenger and
Darwin Barney each had an RBI for the Cubs, who put the brakes on a four-game
Cody Ransom had two hits, while Ryan Braun and Carlos Gomez each had a hit
for the Brewers, who lost for the third time in four games.
Yovani Gallardo (4-5) was pegged with the loss after giving up five runs on
six hits with 10 strikeouts over six frames.
"The numbers don't really match out, (Gallardo) really threw the ball well. He
had great stuff," Brewers manager Rob Roenicke said. "Dempster was good, he
only have up three hits. He's got a two-something ERA which means you're
The Cubs went up 3-0 in the first when Soriano smacked a three-run into the
right-field stands. Starlin Castro singled and DeJesus walked to set the table
for Soriano, who crushed his ninth homer of the year.
"It was a strange night, definitely one of those weird days," Gallardo said.
"It's not easy for the guys being down three runs in the first inning.
Dempster kept the guys off balance and made his pitches. I felt good, and I
felt better as the game went on."
LaHair's leadoff homer in the fourth put Chicago up 4-0. It was his 11th of

A pair of RBI singles from Clevenger and Barney and a walk to Adrian Cardenas

Baker's two-run blast in the ninth capped the scoring.
"It was nice for us to score all those runs like that, especially coming off
what happened in San Francisco," Dempster said. "It feels nice. It has been a
while for me, but it was awful big for our team after a long losing streak on
the road. I was thinking about a perfect game, but the win was the second best
