Indians' Brantley named AL Player of the Week

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley was named the American League Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.

Brantley hit a scorching .538 (14-for-26) with two home runs, three RBI and nine runs for the Tribe last week. He led the majors in batting average, runs and on-base percentage (.625) during the week, and was tops in the AL in hits and total bases (23).

Brantley became the first Indian to earn a Player of the Week nod since second baseman Jason Kipnis on July 1 of last season.

Other noteworthy performers last week included Brantley's teammate Lonnie Chisenhall, who went 5-for-5 with three home runs and nine RBI on June 9 against Texas, as well as the Angels' Mike Trout, reigning Cy Young winner Max Scherzer of the Tigers and Derek Jeter of the Yankees.
