Jays SS Reyes injures ankle

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes left Friday's game against Kansas City on a cart after injuring his left ankle.

In the sixth inning, Reyes slid into second base on a steal and his left ankle rolled beneath him as he slid over the base.

He then grabbed his ankle and was visibly in pain as trainers from both teams attended him. He was eventually lifted onto a cart and driven off the field. Reyes was taken to a local hospital after the game.

"He felt something pop," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons about Reyes. "It's a nightmare. He's a big part of this team. He's in a lot of ways the face of this team, so we've got to deal with it. This train keeps moving."

Reyes, who came to Toronto this past off season in a blockbuster deal with Miami, came into the game with a .412 average and had reached base in all 10 games. He hit a two-run single in the at-bat prior to suffering the injury.
