The granddaddy of them all, the News Sentinel Open, takes center stage this week, as players try to gain valuable experience in efforts to reach the "Big Show," the PGA Tour. This event is the oldest tournament on the Web.com Tour schedule. Dating back to 1990, winners are past and present PGA Tour players, such as Jeff Maggert, Brian Henninger, Tom Scherrer, Dave Rummells, J.J. Henry, Heath Slocum, Vaughn Taylor, Chez Reavie, Chris Kirk and Kirk Triplett.

The top two players on the money list are in the field - Luke List and Casey Wittenberg. List leads Wittenberg by more than $17,000 for the top spot. Wittenberg, who has two wins in 2012, can earn a promotion to the PGA Tour with a victory this week.

Two-time major championship winner John Daly is in the field. Daly failed to qualify for the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup. He he finished 140th in the points standings and only the top 125 qualify for the playoffs. Daly finished tied for 18th two weeks ago at the PGA Championship.

This is the 14th straight year in which Fox Den Country Club is hosting the tournament. Willow Creek Country Club hosted this event the first five years, followed by Three Ridges Golf Club the next four years.

This tournament is one of four original Web.com Tour events remaining on the schedule. The others are the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Missouri, the Wichita Open in Kansas and the Boise Open in Idaho.

Last year, Triplett carded rounds of 67-64-68-68 to collect his first Web.com Tour title. The 49-year-old Triplett finished at 21-under-par 267 at Fox Den Country Club and became the oldest winner in tour history. Triplett will not be on hand to defend his title, as he has since turned 50 and is playing on the Champions Tour. He won the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach earlier this year for his first Champions Tour title.

In 2008, Jarrod Lyle birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Chris Kirk. Lyle shot four rounds in the 60s (66-67-67-69) and finished with Kirk at 19-under-par 269 to head into the extra session. The Australian Lyle became the first international champion in the history of the tournament.

In 2007, Chez Reavie fired rounds of 65-68 on the weekend to cruise to his first victory on the Web.com Tour. He completed his first win at 17-under- par 271 and won by three shots over Kyle McCarthy. It was an amazing week for McCarthy, who missed out on Monday qualifying, but got in as the 31st alternate. He grabbed a 15-year-old caddie, did not play a practice round, and made his first cut of the year.

The Web.com Tour travels to Pennsylvania next week for the Mylan Classic at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg outside of Pittsburgh, where Gary Christian captured the 2011 title.
