Slocum wins McGladrey Classic by 1 shot

Sea Island, GA (Sports Network) - Heath Slocum made a key 60-foot birdie putt from off the 16th green and closed with a two-under 68 Sunday to win the McGladrey Classic by one shot.

With a sturdy stroke, Slocum sent his ball motoring toward the hole from the far side of the green. The putt, traveling too fast for all its 20 yards, was stopped dead in its tracks by the flag stick and dropped into the cup.

It was, perhaps, the biggest putt Slocum has made since the 21-footer he holed to win last year's playoff opener at The Barclays.

That highlight-reel par gave him a one-shot victory over Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington and was his latest win on tour until Sunday.

The 60-footer at Seaside Course? It was good for a two-stroke lead that stood up until Slocum two-putted for a bogey at the 18th for the one-shot victory over Bill Haas.

"That's the tournament winner," said Slocum, who finished at 14-under 266. "I was glad to see that go in."

Slocum collected $720,000 and moved from 43rd to 29th on the money list.

Trying to win for the second week in a row and third time this season, Haas eagled the 15th hole and then parred out for a 66. He ended at 13-under 267 and moved up eight spots to 18th on the money list with a $432,000 check.

"Gave myself a chance," said Haas.

Others ruined theirs.

The second tournament of the PGA Tour's Fall Series was decided in the last three holes for more reasons than Slocum's putt at 16.

David Toms was chasing his first win in nearly five years and was tied for the lead through 15 holes. But he inexplicably missed a four-foot par putt at the 16th, pushing the ball past the right side of the hole, and followed with another bogey at the 17th.

Toms shot a 68 and tied for third place with Arjun Atwal (66) and Robert Allenby (66) at 12-under 268.

"Bad holes coming in," said Toms, the 2001 PGA champion, whose last win came at the Sony Open on January 15, 2006. "Disappointed (with) the way I finished."

Trying to snap a winless streak longer than Toms', Allenby made his third birdie in four holes with a 15-footer at the 17th, forcing a three-way tie for the lead with Slocum and Toms.

But Allenby pushed his drive way right at the 18th, took a penalty and walked off with a double-bogey to ruin his chances of winning for the first time since the defunct Pennsylvania Classic in 2001. He also hit into the hazard and double-bogeyed the 18th on Friday.

"That hole cost me four shots this week, just in two bad drives," said Allenby.

Bo Van Pelt also took a penalty at the 18th when he was within a shot of the lead, making double-bogey for a 66. He tied for sixth place with Charles Howell III (62) and Joe Durant (70) at 11-under 269.

Howell made back-to-back birdies four times for his 62, moving up 47 places from the third round.

Sunday belonged to Slocum, however, who is now a four-time PGA Tour winner at the age of 36.

He improved to 2-2 after holding at least a piece of the 54-hole lead on tour and extended his streak to 15 consecutive rounds of sub-70 scores. But it was an up-and-down effort.

Slocum made back-to-back birdies twice on the front nine on putts totaling 35 feet. He took three shots to reach the green at the par-four ninth and made a bogey, cutting his lead to three around the turn.

He also bogeyed the par-three 12th after missing the green, falling into a tie for the lead with Toms.

But those miscues were a distant memory by the time his putt dropped at the 16th, and all it took was a two-putt bogey from nine feet at the 18th to win.

"It was a great week," said Slocum. "I played a solid four rounds of golf, and it was good to be on the good end of that."

NOTES: This was the first year of the tournament...Slocum went 50 holes without a bogey between the first and third rounds...Tournament host Davis Love III tied for 33rd place...Next week is the Frys.com Open, which was won by Troy Matteson last year.
