NOTES
They say The Grand Slam of Golf is the hardest field to make. Sadly, it doesn`t seem to be too hard to withdraw from it, either. The two-day exhibition, which begins Tuesday, is normally reserved for golf`s four reigning major champions. Ideally, that`s what you`d see, but not this week. Masters champion Phil Mickelson withdrew, citing health reasons, and British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen said no thanks based on an ankle injury. U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell and PGA champion Martin Kaymer accepted, while Ernie Els and David Toms stepped in as replacements for Mickelson and Oosthuizen. Els owns three major titles and the 2010 season has been very, very good to The Big Easy. He earned his first PGA Tour win in two years at the CA Championship at Doral, then followed with a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Els was in the mix for a third U.S. Open title at Pebble Beach, but came up short. He was voted into the Hall of Fame this year. Toms took home the 2001 PGA Championship and despite battling injuries, tied for third at the McGladrey Classic earlier in the Fall Finish. Even though McDowell secured the Ryder Cup for Europe, the best player in the world right now is Kaymer. Including the Ryder Cup and starting at the PGA, Kaymer has four straight victories. This is a two-round event, starting on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. (et) with all the players in the same group. Last year, Lucas Glover, then the U.S. Open champion, opened with a course- record 65 and posted a 66 on Wednesday to win the title by five shots over 2009 Masters winner Angel Cabrera. Stewart Cink and Y.E. Yang rounded out the field. TNT will broadcast Tuesday`s action from 4-7 p.m. (et) and on Wednesday from 5-9 p.m.
