* - Defending Champion
The best of the best will take a shot at glory this week at the PGA Championship. A major tournament record 100 of the top 101 players in the world are scheduled to compete at Hazeltine National this week for the season`s final major championship crown. The winner will join Angel Cabrera (Masters), Lucas Glover (U.S. Open) and Stewart Cink (British Open) in the Grand Slam of Golf in October. After winning the 2008 British Open, Irishman Padraig Harrington won his second straight major with a 12-foot par putt on the 72nd hole in last year`s PGA Championship. Harrington was one of nine players to break par in the final round last year, and his four-under 66 matched the low round of the day. He finished at minus-three, two strokes better than Sergio Garcia and former British Open champion Ben Curtis. The win by Harrington was the first by a European at the PGA Championship since 1930, and he also became the first European to take home consecutive majors. Curtis, the third-round leader, could have forced a playoff with an eagle at the last, but his approach stayed above ground. World No. 1 and four-time PGA Champion Tiger Woods returns to the championship after missing last year`s event due to a knee injury. Woods won this title back-to-back in 1999-2000 and again in 2006-07. Woods is coming off his fourth and fifth wins of the season, giving him 70 career PGA Tour victories. Woods tied for sixth at the Masters and U.S. Open before missing the cut at the British Open. Hazeltine National is hosting the PGA Championship for the second time. Rich Beem held off Woods in 2002, the last time Hazeltine hosted the season`s final major. Beem closed with a four-under 68 to fend off Woods by a single stroke, as they were just two of eight players in red figures that week. Both Beem and Paul Casey are tentative to start on Thursday due to injuries. Beem pulled out of the Reno-Tahoe Open last week after one round, and Casey withdrew from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with a rib injury. TNT has six hours of coverage from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (et) on Thursday and Friday. TNT will also be on the air from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday before CBS takes over from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The PGA Tour heads to North Carolina next week for the Wyndham Championship, where Carl Pettersson won last year.
