Low scores out there at Valhalla

Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - With just over a dozen players finished with their third rounds at the PGA Championship, the leaders will tee off knowing there are low scores to be had.

Among those first 14 finishers, there have been nine rounds of par or better, four of which have been in the 60s. That is no small feat as those players trudged through morning downpours that drenched Valhalla for the second day in a row.

Brooks Koepka and Marc Warren both fired 5-under 66s to soar into a tie for ninth place at 5-under-par 208.

Koepka won three times on the European Challenge Tour last year and tied for fourth at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He traded a birdie for a bogey from the first, and again from the fifth.

The 24-year-old poured in three consecutive birdie chances from the seventh. Around the turn, he parred his first three holes to stay at minus-3.

Koepka converted back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14. He stumbled to a bogey on the 15th, but atoned for that mistake with birdies at 16 and 17 to move to minus-6. However, he bogeyed the par-5 closing hole for his 66.

Warren, who shared 12th at the 2013 PGA Championship, had a steadier round with birdies at one and four. After four pars in a row, he faltered to a bogey at the ninth. Warren erased that mistake with a birdie on the 10th.

The two-time winner on the European Tour stumbled to another bogey at the 12th. He got that shot back as he birdied the 14th. Warren closed his round in style with three consecutive birdies to soar to 5-under.

More showers are in the forecast, so the leaders will also have to deal with wet conditions once their rounds begin. Though playing in rain is never easy, the soft course conditions will make it easy to fire at pins.
