San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Brock Motum finished with 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the Washington State Cougars to an 89-75 victory over the San Francisco Dons in a first round matchup of the fifth annual College Basketball Invitational at War Memorial Gymnasium.
After pouring in 16 points in the second half, Reggie Moore finished with 18 points and six assists for Washington State (16-16), while Marcus Capers contributed 12 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds. Abe Lodwick chipped in 10 points to help the Cougars advance to the second round.
Michael Williams paced San Francisco (20-14) with 20 points. Cole Dickerson recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Angelo Caloiaro added 15 points, and Perris Blackwell got into the mix with 12 points and seven boards.
The Cougars took a narrow 35-34 lead into the intermission after they shot 53.8 percent from the field and made 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in the opening period. San Francisco stayed close by making 42.3 percent of its field goals and five more free throws in the first half.
Washington State ran away with it after the break by shooting 68.2 percent from the field and converting 22-of-25 at the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. The Dons saw their season end as they made only 31.2 percent of their attempts from the floor in the second half.
Washington State held a 36-29 advantage in the rebounding battle and assisted 20 of its 29 made field goals. The Dons made only 8-of-27 from distance in the contest.
