New York, NY (Sports Network) - Maalik Wayns scored a game-high 28 points as Villanova dismissed Rutgers, 70-49, in the first round of the Big East Conference Tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Wayns, who knocked down all but one of his 14 free throws on the night, added six rebounds and four assists for the 14th-seeded Wildcats (13-18) who will be back in action on Wednesday night against sixth-seeded South Florida in the second round of the tourney.

Mouphtaou Yarou recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the victory.

The 11th-seeded Scarlet Knights were paced by Eli Carter who tallied 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor, but no one else on the roster made more than a couple of field goals on the night.

A tight game in the first half, Villanova shot just 39.1 percent from the floor in the period and trailed by four points at the break, 34-30. The Knights connected on an impressive 7-of-11 shots behind the three-point line through the first 20 minutes, but just 1-of-5 at the free-throw line.

In the second half Rutgers completely fell apart, shooting a mere 3-of-25 from the floor, including a disappointing 1-of-7 beyond the arc. On the other side, the 'Cats made good on 52.0 percent from the field and 14-of-19 at the charity stripe in order to complete the comeback.

Rutgers finished the contest shooting a dismal 29.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times.
