NCAA Game Summary - St. John's at Rutgers

New Brunswick, NJ (Sports Network) - Led by 15 points from Eli Carter, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights downed the St. John's Red Storm, 61-58, in Big East Conference action at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Mike Poole added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights (14-17, 6-12 Big East), while Myles Mack chipped in 10 points and Dane Miller posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The victory gave Rutgers the 11th seed in the conference tournament, where they will play 14th seed Villanova in the first round on Tuesday.

The Red Storm (13-18, 6-12) were led by D'Angelo Harrison with 17 points, while Amir Garrett finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. God'sgift Achiuwa scored 12 points and Moe Harkless pulled down 11 rebounds as St. John's will be the 12th seed in the conference tourney and will face 13th seed Pittsburgh.

After a tightly played first half, the teams went to the break all tied at 25-25. In the opening period, St. John's shot only 35.3 percent from the floor and missed all nine three-point attempts. Rutgers shot worse, 30 percent, but did convert 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.

In the second half the teams improved their shooting, with the Knights hitting on 42.4 percent and the Red Storm making 40 percent from the field. The teams traded leads in the period and neither team could pull away.

After an Achiuwa layup with 44 seconds to play put the Red Storm ahead by one, 58-57, a follow-up dunk by Miller with nine seconds remaining put the Scarlet Knights ahead for good. Harris missed a three-pointer with three seconds on the clock and a pair of Carter free throws finished the scoring and sealed the victory.

Each team grabbed 45 rebounds. St. John's struggled at the free-throw line, only making 10-of-22, while Rutgers hit on 16-of-21 at the charity stripe.
