NCAA Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Connecticut

(Saturday, March 3)

Final Score: Connecticut 74, Pittsburgh 65

Storrs, CT (Sports Network) - Shabazz Napier led all scorers with 23 points, as the Connecticut Huskies claimed a 74-65 win over Pittsburgh in the Big East Conference regular-season finale at Gampel Pavilion.

Napier also finished with six assists and four steals in a full 40 minutes of action. Roscoe Smith and Jeremy Lamb scored 14 apiece for the reigning NCAA champion Huskies (18-12, 8-10 Big East), who face long odds just to make it into this year's NCAA Tournament field.

The Panthers (16-15, 5-13) lost for the sixth time in seven games, despite five players in double figures. J.R. Moore led the way with 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Huskies held Pitt to 31.3-percent shooting from the floor in the first half and closed the period with a 15-4 run to take a 36-22 lead into the break.

The Panthers were able to chip away at the deficit and eventually claimed a 61-60 lead on Tray Woodall's three-pointer with 2:15 remaining in regulation. However, UConn answered with a 10-1 spurt to end the threat.

The Huskies got a lift from the return of head coach Jim Calhoun, who had missed the previous eight games while dealing with spinal stenosis. Calhoun underwent a surgical procedure on Monday, and the Hall of Fame coach received a long standing ovation as he walked onto the court.
