Jets' Winslow handed 4-game suspension

New York, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow II was suspended four games by the NFL for testing positive for a performance- enhancing substance, the league announced Friday.

Winslow's suspension will be effective immediately and runs through Week 9. The oft-injured veteran will be eligible for reinstatement during the team's bye the following week and will be able to return for New York's game at Buffalo on Nov. 17.

The 30-year-old, who was out of the NFL for the majority of last season before signing with the Jets in June, was not expected to play in Sunday's game against Pittsburgh anyway due to an issue with his chronically injured knees.

Winslow compiled 17 catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns over the Jets' first five outings while splitting time with Jeff Cumberland at tight end.

New York had listed Winslow as doubtful for its Week 6 clash with the Steelers while ruling out both wide receiver Santonio Holmes and rookie cornerback Dee Milliner. Fellow cornerback Antonio Cromartie was declared questionable after hyperextending his knee in Thursday's practice and sitting out Friday's session as a result.

Holmes also missed Monday's 30-28 win at Atlanta after pulling his hamstring against Tennessee the previous week. Milliner will sit out a third straight game with a hamstring problem of his own.
